Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Rant on Lisa, we all do it!

I've seen quite a few folks selling for $100.00/dz and more. The thing is, even if they are a reputable breeder, there is NO guarantee of the quality of the chicks. I don't care who you are, we ALL have culls. You do have better chances from good breeders for nice stock, and the time and money they have invested in their breeding programs will reflect their efforts, but there is always the chance for a hatch of nothing but culls anytime you hatch. Luckily for me, I can't afford to risk that much money, so it keeps me restrained!

Like Lisa said, as long as folks are willing to pay that much, folks will charge that much. I really appreciate the breeders here, like Pink, Wynette, Don, Randy, and many others who are quality breeders and don't ask for your left arm so you can have quality too! To me that is doing justice for the betterment of the breed, rather than making them so high priced, no one, or select few can afford to own them. There, that's my 2 cents!

Today is day 25. I wish they'd either hurry up or stink, I need my beauty sleep!

Indeed. Hopefully they are gearing up for some hatching. Have you moved to sleeping next to the incubator yet?

YES! I was up 4 times last night checking the temps and humidity!

Chick is almost out now!! Shell still on his butt, all else is out!

Pink, it may be a splash! It has a darker blue head, but the body feathers look, at this point, yellow? Will take a pic or two when it's dry, up and around.

I can not tell you what I charge because I don't sell - YET. However, I can tell you what I have paid. . .

I typically pay $ 10 - $ 20 a dozen depending on how good the source is. . . .

$ 10 - 15 for ebay "Oh what the heck, lets take a risk on these"

$15 - 20 for verified quality lines, but a couple of generations removed from the TOP NAME BREEDER

$25 - 35 for straight from the TOP NAME breeders

These prices are per dozen and do not include shipping. Most people include extras and I end up with 15 - 18 eggs for these prices.

X2

I totally agree on the sharing part I try to be fair on my prices as I've gotten more than my fair share of junk......I do take extra care on the feeding of my birds for hatching eggs along with careful packing etc the money I get helps me out on the feed bill

Probably is a Splash Debbi...I have 2 little splash babies in the brooder right now. One is from Bill and one is from Gnarles. Sometimes I get Splash chicks that have a tinge of creamy or pale yellowish look to them but it is nothing to worry about, I have got chicks from both Gnarles and Bill that have both come out with the creamy yellow tinge and I have had chicks so silvery white they are almost blinding come out..it's crazy. I even have had some of the BC and Bl- Cpr chicks that are pure Davis come out with that slightly yellowish tinge too...it goes away and doesn't stay that color. Now had you told me this was a completely yellow downed chick.........I would have popped an eyeball and fell over.

Yes, thanks. Even though it is still wet, and we all know how much they change once dry, I think it may be a splash. Do you have any ready pics of the 2 splashes in the brooder? This is new to me!

This is both of them with flash so that you can see how whiteish/blueish they really are, hard to take Splash chick photos with flash because sometimes it flashes them out so bright you can't look at them.
