Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Yes, I never saw it before when I helped? Seems they've been connected to the shell as opposed to the chick? Hope he makes it. There was a tinge of blood, so didn't want to go any further. He may just be lazy or yolk not absorbed all the way yet, so I'll let him go for the time being. He is starting to chirp a little more now, so that's a good sign. He got very quiet for a bit too long before I went in.

Sacrifice one or two eggs if you can and crack them open to see if they are fertile. This way you can be sure he is getting some fertile eggs. I sacrifice several eggs and try to check each individual girls eggs from shortly after they start laying and from time to time throughout lay cycle to check for fertility or continued fertility.

$1 an egg sounds very reasonable to me.....if I were to think about it, I guess I would be getting anywhere from $1 to a $1.25 per egg, but then sometimes I discount it even more if I can't supply a full dozen. I hope other come by and share their thoughts with you. I am very curious as to the going average rate that folks are charging per egg.

I have to agree that your egg cost is very reasonable... Why is it then that you will see websites selling Marans eggs for $60/dz?

Thank You Steve. I try to keep it reasonable because I feel that these birds and the good stock they originated from should be obtainable by everyone and I am happy to share them....but I am also not against anyone selling their eggs or stock for $60 or more a dozen or asking $50 dollars for a bird that comes from that good stock.
As to why....I would hope that they are asking their price because they have good quality stock and offer nicely colored eggs. I would also hope that the hatch rates would have been acceptable providing all things considered shipping and individual incubation methods and things out of the sellers control. I would also hope that they are honest and dependable breeders that stand behind their birds. But I am not really an authority on anything related to ebay or even why other sell things as they do and I know I am missing alot and I do hope others will chime in with their thoughts and opinions. I think it will and can be a very good discussion.

What's your humidity? How's that holding out?

Sound like it just wasn't quite done cooking but right on the verge of maybe starting to shrink wrap but had already pipped and was just resting before trying to go a little further. Just leave it in and watch it...I bet after a good long rest it starts pepping up. I would just be sure to watch it and make sure it doesn't continue to dry out to fast.
I notice the late hatchers seem to have more of this than the first hatchers. All 6 that have just hatched all came out nice and moist and free of all linings and shells. I bet that come tomorrow or tomorrow evening I will have some scragglers and they will start to do the same thing.

I can not tell you what I charge because I don't sell - YET. However, I can tell you what I have paid. . .

I typically pay $ 10 - $ 20 a dozen depending on how good the source is. . . .

$ 10 - 15 for ebay "Oh what the heck, lets take a risk on these"

$15 - 20 for verified quality lines, but a couple of generations removed from the TOP NAME BREEDER

$25 - 35 for straight from the TOP NAME breeders

These prices are per dozen and do not include shipping. Most people include extras and I end up with 15 - 18 eggs for these prices.

Humidity is about 70%, and holding. Chucked a warm rag in the bator when I had him out. He's getting more active now, so let's hope!

Good mornin' Debbi! I had read your post you were going to go in after that chicker if it hadn't done anything by 11. I came in from doing some gardening work for a mid mornin cup of coffee and just had to check and see how it was going. Glad you helped the chick...I do the same thing

I'll keep my fingers crossed that they keep getting stronger and are ready to join the others soon. Anything else happening in the other eggs still in the incubator?

THEY CHARGE IT BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL PAY IT!

I have found that just because the egg or chicken comes with a HIGH price tag, it does not gaurantee high quality.

SOME FOLKS think that if they pay TOP dollar, then they are getting the BEST.
SOME FOLKS only got into chickens to make $$.
The combination of these two types of people is dangerous and people end up disappointed and ANGRY.

It is always a case of buyer beware

The only way I could pay $60 a dozen is if I drove to the seller's house and hand picked my eggs

EVER see how crazy some of the auction on EBAY get ? ? PEOPLE are willing to pay crazy prices. The auctions start at .99 and end at $40 - $60.
I betcha most of these people have done little research before bidding. They haven't asked for pcitures, they haven't checked with previous buyers, they haven't asked the seller any questions. . . They see, they want, they bid, they win, they hatch, they cry all the way to the next auction!

OK - - I am done!

Agreed Mathace! Got a couple of people around these parts just making the quick buck and its hard since they sell the Marans and as far as I can see from their stock, do not do any culling or such for quality in the breeding program, so hence the countryside will soon be filled with sub par (side sprigs, etc) birds. Makes me sad.

Indeed. Hopefully they are gearing up for some hatching. Have you moved to sleeping next to the incubator yet?
