Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Debbi~

Sorry about the Splash chick, sometimes they just arent meant to make it, but it made it this far and you gave it a chance.

I have 11 chicks this morning. All are doing great but the last 2 that had pipped yesterday morning had not progressed any further than they had last night around 10PM. I could see this morning through the nickel sized hole they had pipped that the membrane was shrink wrapped to them around the hole. I broke both of them out and both are now running around in the 'bator doing great. 3 Black Coppers (possibly 4...not sure of one that is in the 'bator) and 2 Splash and the rest are Blue Coppers. Haven't seen anything else happening in the remaining 9 eggs.
Going to give them a day or 2 more but I am pretty sure that they will not do anything.

On a good note about 4 of these chicks are from eggs that I couldn't get to hatch before.

Good grief. I've got to get a picture of one of my two marans roos. You wouldn't believe how ugly he is. The hens have been pecking all his feathers. He looks really goofy. Fortunately he doesn't know how goofy he looks. He still thinks he is the "cock of the walk."

Pink Eggs in Maine Hatching Report:
Today is day 21 for my 14 Marans and 10 Wellies from Pink that made it into lockdown.
Just got word from home that my first is out, 2nd one is zipping and another pip has developed... All Gnarles/Davis eggs.
This has all happened since noon today, nothing was going on this am. Very psyched! Pictures to follow at some point in the near future.

I bought what is supposed to be a BCM trio as 3day old chicks. They are now aprox 5-6 weeks old. What do you think?
The first 2 are of the suspected cockerel. Other 3 are of the 2 remaining pullets. Also is the white acceptable?

Huntinwillow- that white will in all liklihood disappear when they molt. Many people get confused by these feathers and condemn their birds to freezer camp too soon. Let them grow. If they still have the white after they have reached 8 months AND had a true molt, and not just a down to feather transition, then you can get concerned about the white. The feathers they have as youngsters are not the feathers they will have as adults.

I picked the Maran's and a few other dark egg laying chickens for pets and there beautiful eggs. I also read they are friendly and that's what I want as I plan on spending alot of time with them. Most all the chickens I've seen and read about about are beautiful and I love reading all the helpful ideas everyone has about everything you need to know.

I have a different perspective on the white wing and tail feathers. If they have white after the juve molt cull as the majority of the time they will have white when they are older. I am going by my limited experience with Marans. Don
