I have a different perspective on the white wing and tail feathers. If they have white after the juve molt cull as the majority of the time they will have white when they are older. I am going by my limited experience with Marans. Don

Don - When is this Juve molt ?
I don't remember ever noticing it with my Marans, BUT my Delawares have enough feathers on the ground to make a couple of pillow with. They are about 4 months old ( around 18 weeks). . . . Is this the time period you are referring to with a Juve molt?

I got 24 wyandotte chicks from Pauls Poultry. They were an assortment...so i'm still figuring out what i've got exactly....I am about 90% certain about what color varieties i've got. this little guy is a silver laced i'm pretty sure. i got him to take some mashed up food and warm water...and he promptly pooped..which is always a good sign. I am thrilled that I got a few silver pencileds and two blues....i was keeping my fingers crossed...

i was pleased they got to me in less than 24 hours from the time they dropped them at the post office in florida

Ohh lucky you!! I have 3 SLW but mine are all hatchery girls. I still love em. Excellent layers and sooo sweet. I've been talking myself out of getting the blue and red laced wyandottes for the past year. I totally want some lol. One of my Olive egger babies started zipping. Maybe I will have a St. Patricks Day baby from a green egg

Those Wyandottes are sure friendly birds! I had 2 Columbians up until last week and they were very friendly. Good birds to have if you have small humans wandering about ( Grandkids during summer, I'm thinking... not that I have any

or a wife

) I just didn't care for the smaller, light-colored eggs.......

x 2 .. . I am with Mel on this one !

Speaking of friendly . . . . yesterday I was on the phone out near the chicken coop. My main chicken coop has a mix variety of birds in it.
HOWEVER, the marans have always been very expressive. The one marans was really ticked off that she hadn't been allowed to free range yet. When she heard me talking on the phone, she ran over to that side of the coop and started Bawkk BAwk BAWKKKKK LOUDLY and repeatedly!

She fussed so much that I had leave the area so that I could carry on my phone conversation

I am yelling, "Turtle, shut up and go lay an egg." The person on the other end of the phone is asking " You named your chickens ?"

YEP, it is truly "NOT RIGHT" in my neck of the woods. . .

Later, I yelling at my free range birds " Tic Tac and Later. .. GET OUT OF THE NEIGHBOR'S YARD!" These two ladies are such sweeties . They usually they come running when I call them, but yesterday there must of been some really good bugs in the neighbor's yard. So I go over there and shooooo them back into my yard. The whole time they doing this little grunting noise, nothing OBNOXIOUS like the MARANS.

I GOT MY SPECKLED SUSSEX CHICKS IN THE MAIL YESTERDAY!

MEL - - they lay those small, light colored eggs WE don't like. I groan EVERYTIME I collect one, BUT they are the friendliest birds.

They hang with me whenever I am outside. They are the ones that will venture all the way up to the house JUST to see what I am doing. LORD help me if they ever discover the garden beside the house
