Yes, silver, like all the sex linked genes is incompletely dominant. One dose gives paler gold, two doses = pure silver or white background color.

Just the roos can be gold. They carry two copies of that particular gene, hens only one. Hens would be either old or silver. Roos would all be split S/s+ gold birchens.

oh...ok..that makes more sense...I was trying to wrap my head around it. Since the hens only carry one copy, if they are silver, their offspring if crossed with a silver birchen will always be silver then, yes?

I know I still have allot to learn which is why Im here. Im just trying to get some more marans that are more true to the breed standard maybe not perfect show quality that cost a arm and a leg but something me and my kids can start with and work our way too better and better stock through breeding and adding better and better lines as time goes on. I bought 40 dollar eggs that are supposed be from this and this line and ended up with only a few hatching if any and seems I ended up with really bad quality not even close to what I was really looking for

. And Im sure some of the eggs i just purchased for way less are not all going to be what I was looking for either. I will cull and sell them to maybe be able to afford some more expencive eggs or chicks. To get us going in the right direction. I do appricate all the help even if is not always what I want to here.

Maybe Im wrong for thinking this way who knows.

VC, I don't know what the parents were on any of the 3 amigos except the lady I got them from said the eggs came from a blue copper Marans breeder and these were from that Nov. 3, 2010 hatch.

A S/s+ rooster does not have a hen counterpart. They are usually a transitional bird when creating the silver form of another color. For example, if you wanted to breed silver salmons from gold salmon, you can't breed a silver rooster in one generation, as he can only get one silver gene from his mother. You'd need a second generation to add the second gene to get pure silver. That is why you don't hear about them much.

Other chicken varities that have pale gold hackle as standard are usually pure gold, with the Ig a gene that inhibits gold like the "blue" gene inhibits black.
