Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hello, Just a quick question... I have a pure black Maran cockerel. Is this rare/normal ? I've never seen a pure black one before but then I'm not a maran breeder so really know nothing.
heres his photo...

I've got a bigger incubator then i could need right now so i can leave them till the end. Space used to be at a premium. I check right off the bat for cracks and air cell issues (which there are a few of both!) I've spent way too much on eggs this year. must guard my golden chicks well haha. just hoping for a good hatch!
Thanks
Sib

don't throw anything out at day 7, mark with a ?, but don't throw out yet! I wait till day 10-14 to know for sure.

I've NEVER had a clear DUD on day 7 become something active on Day 14, but it doesn't hurt to keep it the extra 7 days just to make sure.
If I am not 100% it is a dud - - - I do mark it and re-evaulate at day 14.

SYBLE, I can feel your pain with the cost of eggs! I am hatching 3 differents breeds from many different breeders this year. I am feeling like a motel 6 for chicks lately!
I have another hatch due next weekend. After that, I may actually get a few week break! I will be so glad when there no more chicks in my house.
I have to lock the cat up in my room because the chicks are in the living room. ( The cat is quieter at night while we are trying to sleep

Are you sure it is a HE ??

If you are not sure, could I get a close up of the tail / saddle region? Also, how old is it?

To answer your question - - - YES there are pure black marans. I don't think they are as common as other colors, but they are out there. There is also a pure white marans.

This photo does not show it well but he has the "forked" tail like the other 3... I'll try and get a good photo of him tonight after he goes to bed and I can catch him.
I'm pretty sure its a boy. It is a lot bigger then the others and same comb/wattles as the other 3.
they just turned 3 months old. hatched 1/7/11
heres a bad photo that shows the body more..

So, do you want to know anything else?

In a few months, you can use that one girl with one of your cockerels and have plenty of babies. . ..

Do you have copper on any of your marans?

Lisa, he put them in yesterday so whatever 21 days is from then?

I asked him to keep the shells so I could keep track just in case one chick wanders off

yay...I'll be putting my blue birchen eggs in I think in the next couple of days. We'll have a hatch going around the same time! I'll have that batch filled with some of my other project blues...so i think it will be hard to contain myself as time goes on

oh and I will have some lavender silver sussex eggs in that batch too...yikes..I might die of blue overload!

How are you by the way? haven't seen you around much, but then again, I haven't been around a ton. Lots to do with the weather thinking about warming up finally.
