Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It takes some time... when Madison started to crow, and then started attacking me, his eye color changed...He had that golden "I'm gonna' get your arse" look to his eye...he still has it. It's the mark of a Champion, right, Pinkchick?

Hey, I thought you said he stopped his bad behavior and has been a good boy? BTW..........THANK YOU for the goodie box of homegrown pork, Rick and I are having some of the bacon this morning for breakfast. YUMMY!

Ohhhh...and that Splash Copper rooster that I just picked up is MIA this morning.....I have no clue where or how, just know that he is no where to be found and not in the holding tank where quarantines are kept. Not in any of the coops, not running around down by the goatie barn, haven't seen him in pasture, don't see any remnants or feathers, holding tank is not damaged, but the latch is unlatched like something or someone opened it.

Oh no! Sounds like the Great Escape, but with a little help? I hate it when they just disappear. Any sign of what happened would at least give me closure of sorts. I'm still hoping my pullet is hiding somewhere with a nest.

Sad.... I was really hoping he would be a she but Iguess it explains why "she's" so pretty. I'll get some pictures of the others today. One of the blues has a slight eye infection. From what I can make out he's scratched it and there's a tiny cut. So I separated him, cleaned and treated the wound last night and it looks pretty much clear. Will keep him quarantined for another day or so to be on the safe side. So now I think maybe I do have all boys from that batch. They'll be good looking though.

I said "looks like"

....not for sure, it's just that first photo sure does make the comb look very pinkish red for a pullet at this age. Need photos of the other 2 to compare this chick to. Are the others combs larger and fatter than this one?

I made strawberry jam last year (first time by myself) it came out a little runnier than normal but we are still eating it. I don't know if I could make blackberry lol.

I will be trying my hand at strawberry jam for the first time this year, if the strawberries happen.

They have good growth, but no berries yet. This time last year my daughters went out every morning and picked all the fresh strawberries and ate them before I ever got the chance to use any of them. Good thing I only had less than 10 plants last year or the girls would have turned into strawberries.

Now you wanna talk blackberries..blackberries go with so many things. Few of my favorites are blackberry blueberry jam, blackberry raspberry jam, my personal fav...blackberry pomagranate(sp?) YUMMY, blackberry loganberry, blackberry marionberry, and blackberry lingonberry. I also make an old fashioned chocolate blackberry bundt cake that is out of this world.....with cream cheese frosting.

When you have blackberries at your finger tips and in abundance like we do here in the PNW you take full advantage of the them.....best part is they are free.

My dog Bailey loves blackberries and a couple years ago I taught him how to pick his own berries off the vine...craziest dog I have ever had.

All of my chooks except the Marans will go into the berry bushes, don't know why but they stay clear of them.

Our girls and boys love when we share the strawberries- they get the tops and whatever fruit is take off with it! They just dive for it!

That's right your pullet is missing, I'm sorry. I read that but sometimes it's hard to remember to respond to all the posts, because it is VERY easy to get side tracked on BYC.

Doesn't help that most of the time this thread moves at the same pace as the Indy 500.

Several posts ago I was going to report on my last hatch that just went into lockdown and I got side tracked.
lol.png

56 eggs set, 48 to lockdown.

The 6 removed were...3 clear, 1 blood ring, 2 quitters. I removed 4 Marans eggs and 2 Barnies.

In lockdown:

12 out of 16 Marans eggs

12 out of 12 Olive Eggers

6 out of 8 Barnevelders

20 out of 20 Welsummers

Zanna~ You sure you only want 6-8 Wellies????

Well, some 23 year old beginner was all set to win. He was only yards from the finish line, took a turn too fast, and CRASHED!!!

He did manage to come in second, but it ain't first place. Man...how sad is that? I felt glad for the guy who won though, he was so excited!

Wow those are good numbers. I hope you have a great hatch.

Speaking of missing pullets my SS showed back up wanting to get into the pen. I bet she went broody and has a nest in the woods. She is a nice color but hatchery stock so I don't want her raising mixed babies. She is the one I named 'Snow Falling on Cedars" due to her coloring. Debbie I hope yours shows up..tis the season to be nesting so maybe she will.
One of my marans x split lav/blk orp girls has a nest with a dozen eggs or so and wanting to sit on them. I was out watering in my flower pot ghetto yesterday and heard 'squawk', and looked down and saw I had watered a hen lol. She dug a hole in the middle of several large pots and laid her eggs there, goofy thing.
I saw the cutest thing: My lav orp roo wants to adopt the ducklings lol. I saw him digging in the dirt and calling the baby ducks to eat bugs. He has already adopted the Olive eggers babies. He truly thinks they are his. He won't let any other roos near them. Chases the cats away and the big male muscovy ducks too. He feeds the chicks treats from his beak. I never knew orps were such good fathers.

Hens and Roos: Ohhh blackberry and pomegranite sounds awesome. I used to be able to go down the alleys at our old house in AZ and just find gobs of pomegranate bushes growing wild with huge poms on them. I have a small 'Wonderful' pom now but hasn't produced much yet. I don't know if there is enough blackberries out there to make jam or not. The wild birds and other critters usually get most of them. Last year I cheated and used store bought strawberries lol.
