Awe...that rots! Sorry to hear this, sabella, but GOOD ON YOU for finding it before using the gal for breeding! I'd definitely watch any others from her same hatch - their offspring - could be "carriers"? I'm unsure how the side sprig works there.

I've not noticed a difference in the taste of pullet eggs for a hen that's been laying awhile, but I can see where it possibly COULD taste diffrent since they are so new to laying!

^ Thank heaven none of my girlies are related to one another. I've got to go catch her and call the breeder.

A side sprig is an abnormal growth on the comb. It sticks out to one side or the other, hence the name. It is an undesireable trait in chickens and not something that you want to propegate among future birds. It is genetic, not a contagious defect.

I got some cuckoo marans chicks in April. They all look alike except one is a little lighter gray (not black) and has a bit of a comb. Does that mean it's a boy?

I was recently in Britain and visited a farm that raised the speckledy, a marans hybrid. Here is a sign and a picture of their birds. Thought it might be of interest to US breeders.

One hatched, one more zipping! 5 more to go. The one that hatched is a BIG chick!

Question....

I've noticed a couple of my Maran hens (from McMurray) have blackish polka dots on their legs. Anyone else have this trait?
