Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It's going to be a super busy day for me! Have to go to town to get some tiles I painted glazed and fired and also have to go shopping for the Bachelorette Party I've organized. It's going to be super fun. No bars etc... Making roasted pepper onion and mushroom quiche, bacon chard and orzo salad, charcuterie and cheese plates, shortcakes with fresh fruit salad and vanilla bean chantilly and grapefruit mimosas! Geebs is coming over to candle eggs. Making some homemade facial masks. Then we're off tomorrow for the BP for wine tasting and a slumber party in Pacific City. I come home to lockdown eggs on Sunday! it's going to be a crazy weekend!

Regarding the incubators, my project incubator is a Farm Master. It is a Sears brand, but most of the old Sears incubators were made by Leahy.

I have two GQF's. One is the more modern style, MDF, I think is what Pink called it, and one is a very old, early GQF. It is made of plywood and is simply PAINTED, inside and out with red paint. I would think if someone made an incubator they could paint the inside with some type of non-toxic paint. I would think a light color would be best in order to be able to see in there better. Then if you didn't like the look of paint on the outisde and wanted to show off the grain of some pretty wood you could simply oil or use some other type of sealer on the outside.

Its good to see so many others that are doing summer hatches. I have a batch in set to hatch on the 1st of july. There are some blue marans from my stock, blue marans (dark eggs!) from Helen Byers, black coppers from my stock, blue birchen eggs and a few bantam eggs and a maaaassive light sussex split egg which is growing well so far! I will just die if it hatches, that chicks going to be huuuuuuge!

Funny chicken moments. First a bit of back story. The chicken coop is around 450 feet downhill from the house. There is a circular wooded area between them which is is surrounded by gravel drive. Sherman only just learned that big manly roosters won't be killed by walking on gravel.

Last week DH and I took the ATV (AKA the food wagon) looking at the garden. (Across the drive from the coop) I hear a quiet "bock" behind me. Who do I find but Sherman and a couple of ladies. I "bad chicken!" him and herd him back to the coop.

Today DH comes running into the house and says "go to the front porch!" Lo and behold there are Sherman and all six ladies foraging in the wooded area in front of the house. "Sherman!" He looks at me, wattles flying. "What do you think you're doing?" He bocks happliy and scratches a bit. I look around counting heads. "Miss Blue! What do you think you're doing in the driveway!" She waddles around a bit. "Sherman, you naughty chicken, get those girls back down that hill right now." And you know what? Off they march single file back to their coop. DH gave them a bit of feed to keep them there. Naughty chooks!

She's looking lovely!! I don't know why but it always seems that my splash girls get dark eyes. I've only had a few that didn't. Does it look like her eyes may change? Love her feathered shanks!
