Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I love seeing your birds! I just have cochin bantys but my neighbor has 3 different kinds of Marans. I get to help sort the chicks. Here is a pick of his Golden Salmon rooster. This roo and his hens have excellent laying and hatching rates and didn't even slow down in the Oklahoma heat.

I'm weighing all of mine after they start laying and starting with this hatch I'm weighing them at hatch and then weekly so I can get an idea of how they mature, Then I have to cull at 8 weeks for anything obvious bad comb wrong leg color etc. I don't have that many who get to make the cut.....I'm hoping the quality of the younger hatches is a bit better so they they make the cut......weight is important to me since so many are culls I want them big enough to eat...

For all my spring hatch I weighed and culled anything that was below the minimum weight and I didn't use the allowed 20 % either. I am really pleased with my young Black Copper Marans size. When we breed the undersize females it is virtually impossible to get the big chest and broad back on them. I have an egg lady near me that will buy all the cull Black Copper females .

After seeing some of the new varieties of Marans lately I have one question ? What out of Breed crosses are being used to get these crosses. The French say any out of breed cross and they are no longer Marans. Explain this to me please.

Any out of breed cross in ANY breed is no longer pure ..... I don't understand your point here?? Explain what to you?

Kathy, I suppose I am not as knowledgeable as you appear to be, If you have a problem with me PM me, don't spread it out on the forum.

Oh, I am so sorry if I offended you. I sure didn't mean to. I was just not understanding your question or your point or what you were asking/saying. Sorry. I will just stay away from your thread.........

I think a person could outcross marans for color if they wanted to. I also think it would take YEARS to get back to standard conformation and good egg color and to breed true... If a bird looks and lays right and breeds true, that would be pure enough for me.

I agree with your statement. If a person buys the feed and does the work they should be able to do whatever they would like. The only drawback is if the cross offspring are sold all accross the USA as pure Marans then this is where the problem comes in for me. That out of breed cross will take many years to breed back out of the Marans, and a good example of this is the PENE cross being made in the past and present.
