Correct...you can get to the blue copper from this cross but the resulting offspring may or may not show copper if you are using a solid blue to the BCM. I have made this cross many times and the copper is not always correct...ie...too little to none. Getting the copper correct will take a couple more generations sometimes longer, but as with everything else with this breed it is all a work in progress, so have fun and experiment with them to see what you get and work with them from there, besides hatching out those babies is just plain FUN Chooks and you know it.
Yes you can get some Splash babies from the latter cross, if you want a higher percentage of splash babies, just cross the blue to splash. The resulting offspring may or may not show copper, they can have the gene but not show it. If you want the Splash birds to show copper, your best bet would be to use parent birds that both show copper. No it won't ruin the splash coloring if a splash expresses copper, you will have a Copper Splash. I love them!!!!!
Got a nice surprise and/or disapointment today - depending on how you look at things:
Got a nice dark egg from one of the hens I just separated and put in my "reject" pen (I guess she's trying to save face) and a cute small, dark "first" egg from a young "Olive Egger" that I just added to the Olive Egger pen. Looks like she's not going to lay dark olive eggs like her mama. Now what should I do with these two "rejects"?????
Edited to add: On the small egg, the top half is darker than the bottom half.
Just wondering if any on the forum weigh your Marans females that you are breeding or plan on breeding ? If so what have the weights been ? I plan on weighing all of mine soon as they are over Molt.
