I don't buy the worming with DE. It does not get to the worms that may be involved with tissue, only gut worms, and it doesn't stay in the system long enough to do anything, and is rendered useless when wet. It is also some ugly stuff to work with! Yes, I use the food grade, and a full respirator, and I still have trouble breathing for about 2 days after using it. I can't imagine what it does to the chickens' lungs, afterall, they have no respirator and have to live in it. I have used it in the run to cut down on oder, and it does work a bit. I also throw some in the chook's dust bath area, but I won't be using it in any enclosed areas again; for my sake and theirs. JMHO

You'll get 50% dun Sumatras (chocolate color) and 50%, umm, well they'll be a very neat color. They'll be dun and blue at the same time, which is what I was talking about - It will probably be a shade you've never seen before
I think Chocolate is pretty, but only on a nicely kept, shiny rooster. Seeing a flock of them, they're so dark and dull I could say they're nearly black, like a sun-bleached black. I'd rather have some heritage Rhode Island Reds - Those are glossy and rich in color, yet almost similar to Chocolate
To each their own.
Hey Illia,
Sorry if this is off the Marans topic for a sec.....
While you are on the subject of Dun colored birds and since I know you know alot of the more technical side of genetics I have a question for you. I have some dorkings that are either dun laced, khaki, and dark brown. My question is basically what would happen if I were to use the 3 dun laced girls on a blue bird, a birchen bird, or even a columbian patterned bird? And also...the two cockerels I have are the khaki color and the dark brown. If I were to keep the dorkings together, which boy would give me the best chance of maintaining that nice lacing on the girls?
The girls x Birchen will produce some silver partially double-laced partridgey EE type looking birds, hard to describ, some may look nice, some might just be black with silver leakage.
The girls x Blue will produce quarter Dun with gold or silver leakage, quarter black with gold or silver leakage, quarter blue with gold or silver leakage, quarter odd/neat color with gold or silver leakage.
The girls x Columbian - Is it Wheaten or Partridge based? (how much black in the hackle) - Assuming it is partridge based, You'll get about the same as the Birchen crossing, but the lacing will be much better quality.
If it is lacing you're eyeing to reproduce, go with the Columbian cross. Doesn't matter if you use dun, khaki, whatever - Just as long as the parents have good lacing, the chosen offspring have good lacing, and you can see the lacing

I'll have to see if I can get some pics for you of them. We've had so much rain in the last week I'm afraid they just look a hot mess right now. The girls are a deeper color of dun with really deep black lacing...just eyeballing the lacing I would say its roughly 3/8 to 1/2 inch deep. Maybe I'm not calling them the right thing, even tho that is what the lady I got them from referred them as?
I love all this genetics talk. I want them all! I am trying and trying to hatch eggs. So far I have one solid blue that has a goofy eye so probably wont be using it. That was out of 36 eggs...sigh. I am hoping for more chicks in about 8 days. And I keep ordering more eggs...telling myself this is the last batch, but it never is. I will probably keep ordering eggs until it is too cold to send them. And purposely NOT keeping track of how much I have spent this summer on eggs.
I only just discovered Bev Davis' website. I learned so much already! I have the site bookmarked. Love it!
gilavina, are the birds you're talking about from an EBAY seller? I watched a "Dun/Fawn/Brown" Laced Dorking project on EBAY not too long ago and almost bid on them.

yup...that's her. I just couldn't resist the colors. They went really cheap in the spring and so I thought I'd give it a shot and see what I ended up with. I got 4 cockerels and 3 pullets. Culled two of the cockerels for single combs and now just sorting out which is which. Illia got me wondering if got my colored mixed around. So, I sent an email off to the seller to see if she can help me straighten out the colors.
I just looked online in and image search and am not seeing any photos of the colors I'm looking for....so I guess its just a waiting game now. The pullets lacing really is gorgeous...at least to my eye...

I would love to see pictures, too. I can't find the seller on EBAY anymore either.
I spoke with PINKCHICK this moring and she recommended that I post here. Pink has been a great help and has a great sense of humor!!!
I'm trying to add 3 BCM pullets to my flock. I'm NPIP and in Ohio, shipping is fine. I've ordered hatcing eggs twice. The first batch was all a very very light tan (Orpington tan). The second batch was very dark but I got all roosters, I swear I have the worst rooster luck LOL!
If anyone has any healthy, quality, BCM pullets, ages 4 weeks up to 4 months of age to sell would you please let me know via PM or E-mail? You can check me out with Pinkchick, I'm not a crazy woman, at least as far as chickens go!
