haha...I made him in my workshop

He actually is a product of the first birds I hatched out last year. I know he needs some work, but that color and the decency of his comb keeps him here for sure. I am planning on using him on a few of my BCM girls that are a bit longer in the back and have a lower tail set. I guess for the most part I am happy with him considering I've only been in the Marans for a year and a half now. I've always had Wyandottes since I was knee high to a grasshopper and had breeds come and go since then, but the Wyandottes and Marans are here to stay for sure.

Could you make me one?

The blue copper roos give me the most trouble. I have a hard time producing one good enough for breeding.

Thanks Kim! Believe it or not, but Gigantor is still a tyke himself and I think just turned 6 months old this last week. So, I haven't used him in a breeding program yet since I am trying desperately to thin out my birds to prepare for winter. I don't know why, but I am having anxiety about being prepared for winter this year. I can't wait to see what he throws me tho. The pullet I held back from the same hatch as him has a nice copper collar, but since she's started laying her comb's gotten sorta more floppy. I don't know if I like that so much.

I'm glad to hear good feedback on my birds...this time last year I had many nights of wondering what I had gotten myself into and whether or not I would ever get any good birds. I know I have a long way to go, but I feel like when I watch them on the lawn or when they come running when I come out the back door, that I am getting somewhere...it gets me a bit choked up sometimes. Man....I really am a dork

Holy crap! If you get some Blue Laced Barnies going sign me up!!!! I've seen some pics of them, and have daydreamed about them, but didn't know you were going to start that project. I'll have to go look at your BLRs on the Wyandotte thread. I have a lone BLR girl from Paul's Poultry and she is developing into quite the beauty, but I have no man for her. I'm on the hunt!

Oh yeah...I wanted to ask you what you thought of his back? I know from the boys of yours I've seen they have what I consider about the right balance for length of back. I am not a fan of overly long backs...but would love to get an idea of what you think since it seems we have a similar mindset that way.

Is it just me or did anyone else see where these were mixed breeds.
Both F2 cockerels are sired by one of Kens cocks to the F1 females from an Orp/Marans mating

Plus they have yellow legs which I know is a big no no!

its Almost Imposible to have Dark shanks(Legs) with the Sex link Barring... so yeah Cuckoo or Cocholate Cuckoo marans do have light colored shanks....

part of being a bit more shy I suppose. I'm just happy I'm heading in a better direction than last year.

Haha....I really am keeping my fingers crossed that I will get some good chicks out of him... I got my first blue copper girl growing out in a pen of younger chicks that I really am liking so far. She's got a nice dark copper going and a decent body so far. I plan to put her and a handful of my splash girls in with him to see if I can get a nice blue copper boy.

I'm no breed snob, but I have to say I was relieved to read that mine fit the standard for the sparse feathering. I was worried it wasn't enough. But you know... I totally LOVE the bellbottom look. & You know what else... it's okay to have an imperfect bird, just don't ever breed it, unless you intend to keep all the offspring b/c it's your own little repopulation project for yourself or something. Anyway, I have an Easter Egger with a scissor beak. Night & day I feed her with syringe. Most farms would have culled that one right away, but you know what.... she's my son's "best" & he's two... & it breaks my heart.

So maybe you love your vulture hocked Marans the way I love my Easter Egger w/a busted grill. It's okay to love a freak! <3 Too bad they don't make chicken braces... or chicken razors. JK- let their freak flags fly!!!!!!!!!!!

I think I've gone cu-koo in this FL heat.

Gilavina, Very nice even copper color. Do you still have his mother. If you do you could breed him back to his mother and be own your way to producing some really nice colored Marans.
