Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well, I missed the sign up time for the fair it was 2pm today. I'll do it next year. As for the 2 Marans I was to pick up today, they where not marans. They where very pretty and he wasn't sure what breed. So, I bought them for $7 each one isn't feathers out yet. They look like silver lace wyandotte's but have heavy feathered feet. So not sure what they are but they will be nice eye candy for the yard

I did hatch all winter this year. One hatch every month starting in Nov. It sucked!
I am not set up for it.... no barn or other outside structure for baby chicks needing a heat lamp. We still get in the 30's in Florida, especially North Florida.
All my brooders are designed with 100 degree summer heats in mind - Screened floor, windows with screening, etc. . . . .

My only experience with fowl pox was in the middle of our winter with young chicks.

Plus, there is making sure the chicks have plenty of water every day when it froze over night.

Nope, I will have to pass on raising babies when I have to put three layers of clothing on to go out to do the basic feeding and watering chores.

Please feel free to whine when it's -10 for a good week, with a foot of snow/ice.

Just teasing Lisa, it is a pain. I have a shop room off my house, that I can close off, or open the door for acclimation purposes. 100 watt bulbs if it's really cold outside, but usually after a week, they drop to a 60 watt bulb per brooder. Last winter was a witch, having to go out at least 3 times a day to make sure their water wasn't frozen in the coop, but it keeps me going. I guess I'm a masichist, I like having the chickies in the brooders, and there are no flies in the winter!

haha...Debbi you crack me up! I don't know how it is that you find all these crazy listings all the time. I wonder how much of that is actually true in the description?

It is all relative.... While you guys were still shoveling snow, I was harvesting my spring garden. When you were planting your garden.... I was dealing with 100 degree heat. IT was 94 today.... PLEASE tell me fall will be here soon. I will never get my lettuce to grow if it doesn't cool off soon.

Did I mention it was 94 today ? ?

My grass is brown due to the lack of rain and extreme heat.
