I would be interested in hearing if there is anyone close in South Carolina or if someone would be willing to ship what cost would be--please pm me if there are any out there.

You'd be better off trying to find one near you. Shipping an older bird will run you around $70.00! He'd better be a darned good bird for me to pay that much in just shipping!

Yes, I have checked and I think you are right. My husband want to just try hatching one as our chicks are still so young. I think that would be the best also as I have not found anyone close with Marans. We had to drive a distance for the eggs we hatched these from.

Hey, I grew up in Washington and my family still live in the Everett area! Well, my mother is in Spokane now.

Do you miss the rain???????

I love Washington, but will move if need be. They are trying to allow coal trains to come in to the city I live in and be shipped out to other countries and I am not speaking of tiny amounts of coal either...talking exuberant amounts. There is a moratorium on the trains right now, but if the company that is seeking it gets their way....I am gone. Sad too because this is the town I was born in and with the exception of a few years, I have lived here all of my life. I won't miss the rain though....DH and I have discussed it at great length and if we move we will probably look toward Bend, Oregon area or further south for the remote possibility of a little less rain. I'm sure my Marans would love a little taste of the "dry" life.

Hello Debbi!!!
I didn't end up taking my laptop since my uncle had told me the hotel didn't have very good internet access...but I did indeed find some awesome stuff!!! I got back late last night after nothing but driving from town to town and shopping people's junk. The second place we stopped I hit the absolute jackpot in vintage jewelry. I am looking a few of them up this morning, and just on one necklace and earring from a set I have I have see it priced between 50 and 60 bucks....the bonus is that I have the bracelet for it too and it the set is in better condition than the ones i've seen advertised. That will pay for nearly my whole investment into the jewelry!! And boy did I get jewelry...I have a bag of about 10 to 12 pounds worth

Some of them are really really old too....I'm so excited!!

I also bought a metal egg crate that holds 6 dozen eggs, 2 metal dairy crates that have stamped on the side "Warning: this property protecty by the Pinkerton National Detective Agency (love love love those crates!) and two other metal bins to go with the other crates I'll probably end up using in my art studio for storage and etc. I also stopped at this nursery I love going to and scored three giant mum plants for my mom. She loves Mums! I also went to Fort Hartsuff and talked with some of the people doing a demonstration there on firearms and met an author that wrote a book on NE history that happened to be there. Overall, it was a fantastic time!!

I did pass over some stuff that I really wish I could have gotten, but it was huge and would have needed its own trailor to bring back. It was one of those old, old counters that had the metal nail bins in the front from a hardware store. It was in amazing condition...

but no room. I will keep looking up the jewelry I got tho and think that I will have easily made all my money back and then some. I will keep the pieces I love the most for my own collection, and sell the ones that I don't enjoy as much to others that will love them.

I missed all you guys!

Hey Vicki, glad you had a great time! I love old costume and real jewelry! My great Aunt was a jewelry freak! The bigger and gaudier, the better. She was a real hoot too. Hope you got some Weiss stuff in there, that sells for a pretty penny these days. What, no chickens came home with you???

I've never seen those Pinkerton crates; are you sure they are dairy crates, or were they used in amoured cars?

Well, I'm not exactly next door, but I do have one hen (about 15 months), and one pullet (5+ months) that I'd be willing to give you in exchange for a 50# sack of feed. These are NOT to be used as breeders, as they both have carnation combs, a disqualifying issue within the breed.

But if all you want them for are the dark eggs, that they will be good for. The pullet is just now attracting the roos, so she will be laying soon. The hen lays a #5+-6 egg color, and the pullet was hatched from her, so should lay the same, maybe better. The hen is just getting through with her adult molt and a rough year with too many roos, so she is in the process of growing in new feathers. If you are in the neighborhood, you are welcome to them.

Where in mo are you? May have to take a day trip! What kind of feed do you like?

I'm in south-central MO, about 30 miles south of Rolla. I use Game Bird Breeder feed (non-medicated)

Might be more of an overnight trip depending on where you are coming from in OK. Oh duh! I just read you are from Tulsa. If my memory serves me, you are about 7-8 hours from me? It's been more than 36 years since I've been out that way.

Ok, my memory is way off! It's about a 5 hour trip!

Mornin Debbi!

I'm still sorting through the jewelry and it will take me a bit of time to sort it all...but I've got some good stuff! Two necklace and earring sets paid for the entire amount I spent on all the jewelry and then some. And the bonus is that they are not even the best of the sets i got!...some of this stuff is definitely 50's, but it seriously looks like I stepped back in time and bought the pieces new from the jewelry dept. Its crazy

No chickens...the only ones I saw were some silkie cochin x and when I asked the old farmer about them his face just lit up and his eyes beamed. He was so proud of them.

Yeah the Pinkerton crates are definitely dairy. I did a bit of research when I got home last night and I guess the Pinkerton's shifted their focus during the 40's to 60's to property protection due to World War II. They protected foods and surplus supply among other things. Under the Pinkerton warning its stamped "Lange's Dairy Products."

Morning Everyone!

Hey WALT!

Remember when we were talking about the health person or person who checks birds at the shows here in WA??? I spoke to 6 people the other day here in town that show chickens, both APA and 4-H.......asked out of curiousity if they have ever had their birds tested or if they have ever been tested or inspected at the shows....all had the same answer, NO. They also stated that they have never seen someone at the shows that even does it. All reported that they have seen sick birds at shows and nothing was done about it.

Just thought that I would pass that on.

Thinking about how to broach this in my next phone call to the state vet...............

Pink ~ Sounds to me that they need more inspectors out there. Out here, I believe the NPIP folks are volunteers, or at least they don't get paid, except for gas?? Wonder why you only have one person for the state?
