Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Kim, with this slipped weak wing the bird will usually never be able to pull the primary feathers back up where they belong. Most good Judge will catch this real quick as it is something that is really looked for.

If all is the same after more pictures will email you soon after I go to lunch. I have worked with this problem and can give you some suggestions that will help you out.

Harris5/Don - would be great if you'd post on here or elsewhere on the forum what the suggestions are so other folks who may encounter this would know how to handle - just a suggestion.

AHA! I just happen to have a 2001 SOP, and that picture shows it very clearly. I would say that is definitely the problem, and the SOP lists it as a DQ.

Thanks for pointing that out, Don. I knew something was different about that wing, and now I understand!

So many times you can look at something in a book, and read about it, but until you see it in person, or in this case, in a "real" picture, it is difficult to recognize.

I agree, Ivy. Plus, it's completely different from a drawing to a "real life" picture as well - at least for me.

Harris - hope you don't think we're slamming you here! NOT SO - we all learn from each other's birds!!

So true... I had trouble wrapping my head around "vulture hocks" from the description & drawing in the SoP, so I scouted around looking for pictures. Finally found a clear one and the light bulb came on. It really helps to have this forum and all you terrific people to bounce questions and ideas on!

*I just posted this in a different thread, which I can delete and add to this thread instead, n00b alert!

I will just copy and paste here to see if anybody can help, thank you!*

Hello all,

I am relatively new to the forum and pretty new to chicken keeping. I have been looking for a BCM pullet or laying hen for some time now but without much luck. I have around 15 birds of different breeds and only one is old enough to lay, she is 23 weeks. I am able to find fertilized BCM eggs and day old chicks but would like an older bird. I was wondering if any of you have a bird (or two) to sell or could point me in the direction of where to look. I love the breed and am looking for a hen close to standard (she doesn't have to be 'perfect') she does however have to be sweet and lay some big dark brown eggs

Any information would be appreciated and once I get a little more knowledge or some photo's to post I will be back to contribute to this wonderful thread!

Many thanks, Jayne.

Wynette I can post what I know to be true and it will surely rile up the Genetics experts, That doesnt bother me though.

okay question here, how would a judge look at a rooster who broke it's toe and now is bent crooked- would that just be docked points as per the general section on breed shapes in the SOP or would it be penalized heavier?
