Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks for the ideas! I'm not sure what my hens are hiding. I was told the eggs came from a pen of blue/splash birds with one black copper hen, and this blue birchen dude came from them too.

So who knows! But thanks for the suggestions. I will probably be back with more questions after the first hatch!

And I must say, such beautiful eggs! None of mine are laying yet and I am just dying to see them! My pullets are almost 21 weeks, not sure if I will see them lay at all before winter sets in.

Watch the roos and see if they are chasing the pullets yet. That is usually the first clue I get here, then the combs and wattles get redder and bigger. I'd almost bet you'll have some eggies within the month.

Oh, I hope so! The roo has definently been busy with the girls, but nothing yet!

Give it two weeks, I'll bet you get an egg or two! Two weeks seems to be the magic number after I see the roos showing serious interest in the young girls. One of mine was so cute when she dropped, literally, her first egg. She was in the nest box fussing around. She'd look at me, then look under herself, stand up, turn around, then sit. My big boy Clyde was in there cheering her on till I ran him out, GOSH he's LOUD!! All of a sudden, she stands straight up, and I hear a thunk. She stood there for the longest time looking at it, and when I went over and took it, she followed me around the run, struttin' her stuff! "Good girl, Lil' Red, good girl".

Then, Clyde sings the egg song, and the entire flock chimes in.

good story from Debbi

Some day I'll remember to take a picture of my beautiful blue Marans hen with her equally beautiful egg. I was lucky to acquire her when a woman need to sell her beautiful flock and then shortly after found a sweet little seven week old splash cockerel. In the meantime the "beautiful" white Ameraucana Rosster from the same flock is stating to do the "dance". Oh boy OE before the Marans boy is mature.

Nothing wrong with some Olive eggs in the bunch! Just make sure to seperate your Ameraucana roo out, and give the pullets at least 6 weeks to clean him out of their systems! Don't fall for that "two weeks is good" mumbo-jumbo! Ask me how I know!!

I'm working on sizing a few photos that I'll load up here...hopefully soon. I need another set of eyes....particularly on one wee girl of mine.

Ok...back to pics!

Ok! Here's the first girl. What color do you think she is just looking at her? The second pic is a much more accurate coloring.
