Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Shawn and Debbi! I LOVE the silver....LOVE THE SILVER!!!!

Debbi~ Not sure how much younger he is, maybe a month. Zanna said that she had 2 different ages come from Sue so maybe Sue or Zanna can come by and clear it up. Zanna said something about March and April if I remember correctly. The older boy looks about 6 mos. just because of the familiar little molt he is in and is still sorta at that gangly stage. The younger one has slightly darker eyes and a very small comb for his age, hoping he snaps out of it and starts growing into his long legs and neck pretty soon. But I know he is not a she....he has saddle feathers and has a speck or two of silver coming in on the wing bow.

I'm back Kim! Doesn't take me long to run in and back from Lincoln...especially if I use the backroads

That older one certainly is large! How old did you say these boys were? All it takes is knowing they have the feathers present, no matter how few, and carefully breeding to good feathered girls and you will be on your way! Did you see the photo of the cuckoo chick's leg feathering I posted yesterday? That was done through selective hatching and in one generation of culling. So, you will do great!

I'll sit back and watch the Birchens...for now. Having too much trouble with BCMs and Blues yet!

Sure hope these Splash babies come through for me..

I've got one cockerel that I was pretty sure was a Clyde son. No funny comb, infact it looks pretty much like Dad's. He is even built oddly, much like Clyde was at that age. The last two days, I woke up to this little stinker in with my Silkies!

Evidently, he had found enough slack in the netting on the top of their 4' pen to get under, and fly down into their pen. At first I really freaked out, not knowing what he had done or would do to them. On the second morning, I watched him with them for a bit, and there is no doubt in my mind now that he is a Clyde son. He loves the babies, and was clucking to them to show them goodies, and then just lay down right in the middle of them. Wish I could've gotten a pic of that, it was so cute! But, just for safety's sake, I zip tied the slack so he can't get in any more. This morning, Jeff was standing by the Silkies pen gate, looking so forlorn that he couldn't get in with his new friends. Poor dude..

Keeping out the rif raff and keeping the fuzzies safe

haha...what? You immediately don't want to run out and buy birchens? haha. I am just so happy that there are more people raising them! I felt kinda off on my own when I first got them. Now theres Me, Lynette, Kim, and I know I'm forgetting a couple of others.

Me thinks Kim might have a new obsession brewing over there.

Yay!! I'm not alone! hahahaha Time to start a birchen thread eh?

The Birchen obsession started a while ago...it's just that I didn't have any in my hot little hands to look at in real life.

It kind of makes me nervous with a new variety, ya never know what may be behind them. I saw some on ebay quite awhile ago, and I would swear they looked more like Iowa Blues!

Pene in the BCMs, Godknowswhat in the others??

Really nice folks I have been talking with them for a little while nice nice birds good luck!!

Vicki~

I did see the cuckoo feathered legs. Nice job! My Bill has clean shanks so I know exactly what it takes to work them back...a little patience and a lot of culling.
