what ones are you eyeing? I purposely don't go there right now so I don't end up bidding on something...

If my girls in the barn "just happen to go broody" then slipping some eggies under them doesn't really count right?

I know you were just teasing. It's all good!

and nope sure doesn't count if the broody happens to finds a couple of eggs to sit on.

Awesome....cuz my sweet cuckoo broody just "found" 10 dark eggies to sit on

The nest she is on sets 3 feet off the ground but eggs float right?

I pulled out my egg chart and for the first time I have eggs that are 7s! Some are 5s and 6s, but I'm so happy! I'm making progress!

Pure solid Black, Blue and Splash Marans are very rare. Knowing for sure that they do not have the copper or Birchen gene in them is very hard. Alot of "Solid" Marans out there are really copper/birchen Marans that are OVERLY melanized and do not show the copper because the melanization has covered it. If looking for truly pure solid Black, Blue and Splash Marans do alot of homework and asking of questions to find what you are after or a person could find that they paid alot of good money for Black or Blue Coppers that just do not show any copper. A person can find alot of reputable breeders to work with through the Marans of America Club or Marans Chicken Club USA and many here on BYC as well, just takes some digging and the nerve to ask important questions. If someone doesn't want to answer questions about their birds or birds history......MOVE ON...don't waste your time.

Thank you......

I don't blame ya for not takin on a new color. It is hard to know what's behind them. I've had my shares of ups and downs with the birchens, but am doing good now that I've culled out the ones causing problems

You are very welcome and I hope more Marans friends come by and give their take on this for you. Just remember the most important thing is to ASK QUESTIONS and do your homework.

The one older BCM hen I saved back somehow found 6 dark eggies. She is spread out over them like she is saying, "MINE! These are all MINE!" My BCM's have sure been a broody bunch this year. I am still waiting for this years pullets to start laying.

yay! are you going to let her brood them? I looked on the calender and these babies should be due Nov 1 or so if she stays broody!

Did you see my post to you about the show I wrote this am yet? If you get to it before I had to work here in a bit, I can see if I can mail it off to you.

Finally had a second to snap some cell phone pics of my new marans! ALL of them are feather legged and very active. They don't think too much about me though. LOL
