mornin everyone!

hope you get some babers today Debbi! there really is nothing like baby animals!

today is my sorting day for figuring out for sure who will go to the show. I realized yesterday when I was doing a cursory run through of who I thought might be ready I don't have any show kit put together anymore after not showing for a few years while I was in college and etc. So, last night i started putting my kit back together and it has led me to a question. For those of you that show, do you have a favorite shampoo that you use and for white birds...is there something new to use besides bluing (which around here I haven't seen since I moved back)?

Mornin' Vicki!

On one of the Silkie threads, they are using Tide w/bleach alternative for their whites! There are also those who use white dog or horse shampoo too, and some do a rinse with glycerine to put back some of the oils and give a sheen.

Hope I didn't curse myself the other day when I said, "I only want ONE Splash roo!"

That would be my hatching luck!

When broached with the subject it is simply skirted and denied. At the VERY least they should take them off the market and stop selling them or sell them as what they are....Maransencas.

First I've heard of Maransencas. Would you mind splainin' that term, please?

That would be a cross between a Marans and a Penedesenca. The Penes are where all these funky combs are coming from!

Sorry....I should have made it clear that I was being a GREAT BIG Ol' Smarty pants when I made up that name.

I was going to edit to add, that that was a "tongue in cheek" kinda answer, but hey, it fits the bill!

I was on the Pene thread the other day, and MY birds have better carnations than theirs did!

I HAVE to comment on this. Marans are literally a brand new breed. Of course, nonsense is going to crop up - constantly - even in lines labelled "Davis". But I am confident that Bev Davis herself would NOT sell birds with such defects although she has NO control what hatches out of the eggs, even her own. Others may choose to continue selling birds from "Davis" lines that show up with such defects and as with ALL things - it is buyer beware.

And one additional comment - bad combs, clean legs, and such are not necessarily the end of the Marans breed as we envision it. Egg colour is the priority for some and, I believe, that is also the bottom line among the French breeders as well. For some, in the almighty persuit of the SOP - egg colour is being ignored.

Aren't we lucky we have forums such as these with threads such as these so people can educate themselves and make decisions about what they can and can't live with.
