No problem... I've had the Marans for about 2 years now and they really are different than any other breed I've raised throughout my life. But....I do love them so...they are so sweet.

Any other good but not crazy priced breed you'd all suggest? Gilavina got any chicks? lol or adults 2 this point lol!

chevgrl ~ Believe me when I say, I get NO joy out of telling you this! I had another person here that I had to warn as well. You need to tell him about it, and when I questioned the weirdly colored chicks I got, he said he'd never had a problem like that. Well, now I have heard froim at least three people that have had these problems from his birds. Think I will write him too, it still makes me ill to see all these birds, and believe me, they are ALL going, one way or the other! there needs to be a discussion group somewhere, where folks can compare birds and make a "black list" of breeders! I AM NOT SUGGESTING HERE ON BYC, so moderators can calm down!

The sad part is, I'm afraid it's not just the ebay breeders passing this along. More people have this problem than are willing to admit. JMO

well ya! because some of us are meaning well to produce standard marans. A newbie would have no clue. They are a big name seems to get thrown around alot with bevs and id never have known. Your the first ive hear say anything about it. so i feel pretty let down by Dave. What purpose was it suposed to serve to mix the breed? is there something that the other breed gives Marans that they dont already have?

hey Debbi...got a question...how soon could you tell on your birds that you had a carnation? chevgrl asked earlier but i wasnt sure.

When I first noticed it on the cockerels, I believe it was about 4 weeks? At that point though, I was still trying to learn what to look for. The pullets' combs tend to stay smaller for longer, so it makes it harder. One gal I could see early on, like 8 weeks? After seeing several I can tell you this much; look towards the back end (blade) of the comb. When the combs start to develop, it will look like the comb is ingrown, almost if like you squeezed it, it would pop out. It won't trust me!

But as they age, you will see it come out more and more. Some of the pullets don't fully show till point of lay, and if the comb has flopped over, it may be hidden. The flopped comb is one tell-tale sign I now look for in my pullets!! Believe me when I say, this spreads like wildfire!

From what I understand they mixed Penedesencas in to try to improve the egg color, but its opened a huge can of worms now...Its really hard to see anyone have problems with it...esp those that have been breeding a while. Luckily you can do something about it now before it gets too bad ya know?
