thanks! I will also be testing out my new flashlight which has 170 lumens and can shine through my darkest egg(which is from my Blue Copper Marans pullet)

yeah...its hard when a fault like that shows up...especially when its a really fantastic bird, but it is the best decision to cull it as breeding with it will only cause further issues to pop up. Another boy will come along that will look better and not have the sprigs...

holy crap! you'll have to tell me how it goes and where you found it. I have given up candling the really dark eggs as I can't seem to find a flashlight bright enough

If all you are breeding for is dark eating eggs, keep him. If you are planning on breeding towards the Standard of Perfection, and plan to sell eggs/chicks, CULL HIM NOW! Side sprigs and carnation combs are a huge problem in this breed, spread like wildfire, and are DISQUALIFYING FAULTS. A side sprig in any breed is a DQ, so as pretty as he may be, he is not going to benefit you or anyone else down the road. His offspring will either all have one or more, or pass on the genes for it. I know how sad it is, I'm culling almost my whole flock due to these problems, just trying to save you some time, tears, and money.

Good morning all

Vicki ~ It's in the 40s here this morning too, way better than 28*! Supposed to get into the 70s!!

Today is the Sedalia show. Too bad Susie can't give us a blow by blow update on all the action!! Have fun Susie!! Wish I could've made this one, too tired, and too broke right now, maybe next year..They are also having the Silkie National there this year, so I lost out all around.

Good luck with your hatch Hens!!

What is a DQ in the combs besides side sprigs and carnations? What are some other DQ's I need to know? Like white feathers, clean shanks etc. Just looking for faults to cull with. Anything I would not want to have in a breeder.

Flopped combs in roos I think. Also pearl or black colored eyes. Haven't had enough coffee yet to think of any more!
