Oh no I think we need lav birchen marans LOL!! They are lovely as sussex too though. The only sussex I have are 2 hatchery speckled sussex hens. One has curled toes and is named Maya and one is named snow falling on cedars because that is what her feathers look like to me. They are the chattiest girls in the barnyard lol- they never quit gossiping. Maya likes to hop up on my lap and tell me long stories about what goes on in the coop when I am not around. They are so sweet. Are your sussex like that too?

My BCMS usually start laying between 5-6 months. As mathace said depending on where you live if the days are getting shorter it may take a little longer but you should probably get an egg soon. Have you noticed if your girls are starting to squat when you go to pet them?
Don't worry about which thread to post on. We love to hear about all the Marans here and sometimes other breeds too (LOLOL). Hey just be glad you didnt get wheaten Marans, they take @ 7 mos to lay lol.

You could try boosting thier protein intake a little and see if that helps.

haha...I'll let someone else tackle that project. I'm pretty focused on gettin the birchen Marans right first. If I am feelin goofy once that happens, then maybe I'll think about it. haha Yeah...my Sussex are pretty sweet...they are so curious. When my first batch of Sussex chicks were growing up I would get kind of nervous cause the boys would always get so close to me. At first I thought it was because they were going to flog me or attack or whatever, but no...they just want to watch everything you're doing and wander around talking and investigating everything.

Well, got some mucking and measuring done today. Monday it's off to the lumber yard to pick up some more lumber. Going to build a long and low Silkie coop off the back side of the main coop. Then fence off from the back corners of the main coop for their run. That should work, at least for now. Then I'll have the small pen and coop I have now for the Silkies, for some single matings of Marans. Putting another ad in the free classifieds tonight for 7 roos, hope someone bites!

With 7 roos, 1 pullet, and 1 hen going to be gone, I won't know what to do with all my money saved on feed!

Oh wait, it'll help pay for the new coop, yeh, that's the ticket!

That will be nice to have a new silkie coop. DH is almost done with mine. It has a 3 hole nest box just a few inches off the floor that comes off the back of the coop so they have more floor space now. I did just have a dog carrier in there for them to lay in. I think they will like the new ones better. I had put that dark blue silkie rooster in with the silkie hens several days ago. I have been spying on them and I haven't seen him try to mate them even once. WHat the heck? I know he's a boy. I have a splash roo that would do it in a heartbeat but I didn't want to use him because the other one has a blacker comb. This dark blue roo was not the lead roo in the other bachelor coop so I wonder if that's why he's not mating them?

Can he see them??

I moved mine's water pan the other day and they were all standing there with their tongues hanging out. I only moved it TWO FEET!!

They sure aren't the brightest bulbs in the box, good thing they are cute!

Maybe he's just shy in his new digs? Mine just turned 4 months old today, and I already have 2 crowing. They are getting big, and they change so much in just a couple of weeks. That one cockerel that was born with Partridge markings, and then turned solid blue, is now starting to get some Partridge coming back in on his wings and hackles. Can't wait to see what he feathers out like. I'm going to stay with the Partridge, and BBS. May get some Buffs later on, and I WILL get a Showgirl, full NN cockerel in the spring!

Lynette, I saw you checking out those Ayam Ketawa laughing roos!

If that wouldn't tick off your neighbors, nothing would!! My neighbors would just think it was me, sitting on my deck, drinking too much wine!

I would so get some of those if they were in this country!!

Yes he can see them because the other splash roo was using him for a prison b***ch and pulled most of his crest out. I hope he's not gay LOL! Seriously though, I think he may be shy or doesn't know what to do. He does have a huge awesome crest and vaulted skull when his feathers are present. He isn't a real aggressive boy like the other two silkie roos I have. I will never put my white silkie roo back in with the girls ever again because he attacked my little buff silkie hen named Tater Tots (because she is from bobbi porto's buff roo named Tater) and actually knocked her unconcious. I really thought she was dying and grabbed her up. She came back to and I separated all the roos from the hens until when I just recently put the dark blue roo back in with them.

That's so wierd about your partridge turning blue then partridge again...kinda cool!! I like the partridges and the splash and the buffs. I had a lavender hen but she died from a head injury as a chick. I would like to get some more lavenders and some nice blacks.
