Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

The wheaten male should have a gray undercolor, but the undercolor in most APA standards is not a cause for great concern. The cotton fluff at the base of the tail would be more of a fault. When drawing up the Proposed Standard for wheaten the promoting group could write it up with anything they like if they want. I would kinda like to see the cotton tail fluff left as acceptable but do not have a say in any of this. I should also say that breeding a male with the light gray undercolor will produce female with more surface color on the back and really help with female color.

Sorry to butt in but I am new here on BYC. In fact I just registered the other day so I could bid and buy hatching eggs from Wynette. This after reading the entire Marans thread from the beginning (as well as many other threads from the beginning like the Welsummer, Olive Egger, Easter Egger and others) and trying to absorb as much as I could.

My 7 Black Copper Marans eggs and 7 Olive Egger eggs came today and I am just so pleased. Wow, those eggs are sure packed well. They are currently resting for 24 hours and I will put them in my new Genesis 1588 tomorrow. I sure hope I do well as these babies will hopefully be the start of my little flock.

I really like the looks of the BCM, really pretty in my blook but those dark eggs are what drew me in.

I am really hoping I do well with the hatching. These chicks will be the start of my hoped for small flock as pets and for eating eggs. That is if I get girls they will. Can't keep any roosters here.

hi all
i'm new to this thread. after spending the main part of this evening and afternoon looking through this thread and not finding the pic i am after, i thought i better ask. does anyone have a pic of a wheaten marans roo and hen at around 6 weeks of age? i hatched out one, i think roo, on aug 6th and i want to see how he looks compared to other roos. oh and heres another question when do their feathers turn black he is feathering out with a lot more brown feathers than i expected, is that normal? its to dark out and its raining for me to get a picture of him now but i will try and get one tomorrow. thanks for any and all help

Second, here's a blue Wheaten pullet at 5 weeks old. A normal wheaten girl will look the same - they should be solid wheaten brown with a creamy underside.

Here's a Wheaten cockerel at 6 weeks old. They should be red and black.

Here are two photos of my Wheaten Ameraucana pullet and my Wheaten Marans cockerel. She was about 5 weeks at the time of the photo, and he just over 6, I think. Hope it helps! I'm playing the same game now with 9 more Ameraucana chicks. That's the great part about wheatens though, is that by 4 weeks you should have a pretty good idea.

Finally, after at least 50 pics, I got a semi-decent shot of my 11 week old girls! Of course, right after I took this pic, a crow flew over and they all stood up tall & pretty!

I, of course, was not quick enough to snap THAT pic! Glad I don't have to eek out a living by taking photos!
