Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

our hatch is all finished, we ended up with 1 black marans chick, 2 splash marans chicks and 4 blue marans chicks plus 2 lt brown leghorn bantams. The marans were shipped and we started out with 12 eggs so not a bad hatch rate.

Last night we heard a funky noise coming from the brooder- wondering if we have a cockeral who is vocalizing at 2 days old?

will try and post some pictures.

My marans found a plant they love to eat leaves and flower calyces and all lol. It is the red tea hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) I grew two huge ones this season and they were full of red calyces that I usually collect to make hibiscus tea. There were hundreds on there and Hmmmff, today I noticed that they have just about eaten all of them!! Brats!

I know it's not funny, but red to them is like red to a bull! I also found out that brighter shades of orange and yellow (without any green tint to it) do the same! I went out the other day to the run, with a generic oatmeal, carboard container, to give the birds some treats. While I was standing next to the outside fence, being inside the Silkie run, Pip EXPLODED up against the fence! I was just standing there when he did it with the yellow container, and it dawned on me, it might be the color. As soon as I left the main run with it, here comes Pip! Talk about fire in his eyes!!!

I tossed the container towards him, and he ripped it to shreds!

Beak and spurs were a flying! Guess I'll just use the old, white, 5 gallon bucket from now on...

I have always felt that the best part of going anywhere or doing anything was coming home. I have worked to make my home my favorite place. I have a stocked Bluegill/crappie pond, Riverfront property with a great fishing hole & fireplace at waters' edge, I have my shop, my critters.....everything I want right here. I hate to leave and always am glad to be back.

My semi new coop has a half pipe that's about 4-5ft long its mounted about shoulder height and I put straw in it and my marans love it. All colors bbs sit in it fin together but my girls don't handle the other breeds pooping in it... they are neat freaks.

Thanks. Won't be anything in the pen but BCM's, so other breeds will not be an issue. Just wondering if they required privacy to lay. Now, to come up with a design.

Slick, don't know about anyone else's BCMs, but all my girls DEMAND everyone to watch them when they lay! An egg layer always draws an audience, and my roo Clyde, gets everyone to sing the egg song!

Mel, you're making me really jealous with the description of your place. Only I'd want black bass and channel cats in that pond.

Thanks Debbi, that's good to know. I was hoping I could get by with a community type nesting box instead of compartments. I'm a lousy carpenter and this will make it much easier on me.
