Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I'm just now getting started in the Marans so the only thing I know for sure is you have to watch out for stupid combs, short toes, and make them run through Canadian dew to grow feathers on the shanks (j/k on the last part). Somewhere back a ways there was some really good pics to figure out what a stupid comb is.

Huge HUGE LOL....thank you, needed that today.

Seriously hang in there with this thread, soooo many knowledgeable, generous and funny, fun folks on this thread....you will learn if you follow for a period of time. If you are really serious, you may peruse the last 1k pages and you will pretty much cover the breed:th

Yes, I am a newbie to this thread and it freakin WHIZZZZES by. But there does seem to be a lot of very knowledge, honest and poassionate "Maran-ers" on this thread. My only complaint is that there is not a "bookmark feature" to this thread that one could refence in the future. Or perhaps, there is and I am not aware of it????

In the meantime, I think I am going to start my own little "topic refernce" library on a Word.doc.

I wonder if our Canadian dew might make those short toes grow too ????? (I'll let you know in the spring

A list of what to cull for huh???????

Ok, this is my list and others lists will be different and I have no order of importance and probably missing something...

Carnation combs
Sprigs
White in the feathers....unless it is a Splash bird
smile.png

Wry tail
Crooked toes (unless the toe/s were injured after hatch and you know it)
Fused or webbed toes
Yellow legs
Pinched tail
Squirrel tail
Narrow bodied birds......(give me birds with nice broad shoulders and a nice wide chests and good long deep keels)
White Earlobes
Feathers or stubs on any toe unless it is the outer toe
Mossiness.....I cull for mossiness, but haven't had it show up in a long time, only when I had another line of birds.
Split wing or Angel wing
Crooked beak or beak deformities....I have been very very lucky with this and haven't had any
Fluff at the tail break

That's all I can think of right now...hoping more will come by and add on with their lists.

anybody else? Thanks

Good list Kim! I also look for proper eye color. Eye coloring doesn't get to the correct shade though until the birds are around 5 months. Eyes should be "Reddish Bay", not pearl or darkbrown/black! Pearl or dark eyes is a DQ.
