Yes, I am a newbie to this thread and it freakin WHIZZZZES by. But there does seem to be a lot of very knowledge, honest and poassionate "Maran-ers" on this thread. My only complaint is that there is not a "bookmark feature" to this thread that one could refence in the future. Or perhaps, there is and I am not aware of it????

In the meantime, I think I am going to start my own little "topic refernce" library on a Word.doc.

Paulo ~ You can add a certain page to your "Favorites" list. Or at the bottom of each page here, on the left side, it will say "Subscribe to this thread". Click on that, and it will send updates in the thread to your e-mail.

Rancher and Slick ~ Best thing to do is post some good profile and frontal pics of your birds. Folks here will be happy to help you chose who to keep and who to cull. Be aware, if you ask for a "critique", you will get one.

Thanks Debbi!

I didn't mention eye color because it takes so long for them to change and I have seen dark eyed birds eyes change to the proper color, but completely forgot about the Pearl eyes, good catch sister.

My Blue Copper boy that Don suggested that I hold on to had very dark eyes....his eyes are beautiful now, I think he is going to be 8 mos. old, can't remember exactly without looking at the calendar. (feeble mind) I thought his eyes were not going to change. See what I get for thinking?

I'm just now getting started in the Marans so the only thing I know for sure is you have to watch out for stupid combs, short toes, and make them run through Canadian dew to grow feathers on the shanks (j/k on the last part). Somewhere back a ways there was some really good pics to figure out what a stupid comb is.

I posted pics back on page 2500 at the end of the page. Please notice; "Stupid Comb = Carnation Comb" in my case anyway!

Monrin' Pink! Yes, I guess they can change, but with my birds here, if they aren't the correct color by 7 months, they aren't going to be. The only ones with dark eyes here are Olivia and Charlotte. Although they have lightened some, they are still too dark brown. I have never had a light or pearl eye...probably shouldn't have said that!

but in all seriousness, you should test those girls with a roo that has correct eye color and see what happens. I think it was Geebs that once mentioned to me that the females eyes can be a little darker than the males and that it was acceptable but she was not referring to the dark dark dark eyes.

I have been looking for the article that I have somewhere that talks about melanizers and eye color and I can't find it!

It is very interesting.

I'm not sure if I see a connection between the melanizers and dark eyes. Both of my "dark" boys are over melanized, and have the correct eye color. Pip has that "Hulk Hogan" two toned hackle thing going on, and his eyes are correct too. All my hens are over melanized and have correct eyes. Olivia is so dark, even her comb still has some dark pigment in it, and her eyes are very dark brown still at almost a year old (gosh they'll be 1 on Jan. 3rd!). Charlotte is a very light Blue color, and her eyes are dark too, though nowhere near as dark as Olivia's. They are both going to be test bred, so we'll see what comes of it.
