Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Those are some great pictures. I copied one and stuck it in my Marans SOP folder, hope that is okay. So far, nothing like this on the little ones I have.

Thanks and no problem if you borrowed a photo....that's what I post them for. The more folks that know what this is and are aware of it in this breed of chickens....the better.

Share that with everyone you know if they have Marans. I plan on keeping this little male for taking photos of as he grows out so we have lots of progressive photos of the carnation.

Besides, I have to keep him now as I found Gnarles dead in the coop yesterday when I went out to feed. I don't believe he was sick, he showed absolutely no signs of anything and I couldn't find any injuries. He has been healthy and happy and just finished a really hard molt and was looking glorious again.
Is it possible that they just have random heart attacks and die? He wasn't all bunched up or curled up in himself like a sick bird will do, he was rather sprawled out, like he had a random heart attack and fell off the perch. I found him on the ground of the coop just below the roost.

Kim, I am Soo sorry to hear this!

I had one bird last year that just fell over dead while roosting. A young pullet. No idea what happened. I sent her to Waste Control.

BTW...are The Blues Brothers offspring of Gnarles?

I just loved him too! I still have a nice cockrel out of him and I think Chloe or Charmin I can't remember which but would be glad for you to have him back you have been so generous to everyone I wish to repay that to you some how. That is just so awful I almost cried and if you knew me you would understand the almost part.

Sorry for your loss PINK! Those happening remind us of how much we truely love our feathered companions.

I am suprise no one mentioned: Spiders! (Black Widows, Brn. Recluses) Check the corners!

UGH!!! Someone just had to mention spiders...the one thing I hate more than anything else in this world!!! haha. I screech like a little girl when I see them. But...but I've upgraded to screeching and running away as fast as I can, to screeching and looking for anything to kill it with...preferably something long or with a handle so I don't have to be within 3 feet of it when I do.

Thats was me, Paulo.

I mentioned it because when we lived in Monterey I lost a couple chicks to Black Widows. I had mentioned my losses to a old timer (best neighbor ever...we useto trade Veggied for eggs) and he was the one who told me to look for spiders. I found the little devils underneath their brooder. Once I eliminated and spread Sevin dust around I didn't lose another chick.

that's crazy...we don't really have anything like that around here so it never crossed my mind. But I'm still freaked out by spiders.. I don't care what kind haha

So since testing Gnarles is out now....I removed the Black Copper hens and put them in a coop all of their own. Tomorrow they will be introduced to Gnarles Blue Copper boy that Don suggested that I keep, we will see what I get from that cross.

In with Lil' Bill ....I went back to my old tried and tested VERY dark Blue Copper girls of Bill's that are 2 years old this month and yes they do not show any copper, well it's there it's just very very very dark and you would have to hold them in them in the sun light to see how dark it is, they are Bill's dtr's after all. They were produced from my original Davis hens and have been both bred to Gnarles and not produced stupid combs and have been bred back to Bill and not produced stupid combs. We will see what happens.

Here's the kicker...#96 is clean legged and lays a lighter egg......#92 has a very light shank feathering and lays a lighter egg.
This photo of #92 does not do her justice. I was at a weird angle making funny noises trying to get her to look at me and she was concerned about getting her share of the scratch on the ground. She and her sister #96 are built like tanks and very similar.

#96...she is clean legged and a smidge darker than her sister and no her earlobes are not white.

She was trying to lay this afternoon when I took these pics.

Their width and size, if you can see them both.

I also put in Darryl one of my original girls. Note her comb right now...when she starts to lay it will be bigger and it will flop in the rear and remain that way throughout lay. Her nice long back could be useful as Bill and his offspring tend to have shorter backs.

Of course none of them are laying.

those girls are tankly Kim! I love the hefty ones like that. I still owe you a pic of that big ol' splash girl of mine. She hates the camera....if I think of it I'll try to get one this week when I do chores.

had a bit of a fright tonight...One of my little bantam BCM project girls that I really like is not doing so great right now. Close as I can guess is that she jumped up on the fence of my guard dog's pen and must have overshot and landed in his water bucket. When I found her he was pawing at her and had flipped her out of the water. Got her inside and dried off, but she seems to be still warming up. She had a few scratches from the pawing, which I cleaned up and put a bandage over them. I don't know if she is in shock or not, just hoping I found her in time. She is the best bantam girl I have right now. Why is it always the best ones?
