Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

If you could buy bcm chicks from anyone who would it be. I am looking to order some eggs or chicks for spring. I hate shipping but was considering driving to get some. A few others in my area would like some good quality birds to beef up their little flocks so I would like to find some that would add some to the genetic pool. Anywho I can't drive more than 4 or 5 hours unless I get my husband to take a day off work. Suggestions?

had a bit of a fright tonight...One of my little bantam BCM project girls that I really like is not doing so great right now. Close as I can guess is that she jumped up on the fence of my guard dog's pen and must have overshot and landed in his water bucket. When I found her he was pawing at her and had flipped her out of the water. Got her inside and dried off, but she seems to be still warming up. She had a few scratches from the pawing, which I cleaned up and put a bandage over them. I don't know if she is in shock or not, just hoping I found her in time. She is the best bantam girl I have right now. Why is it always the best ones?

In your case, it's because you have already culled the "junk"... all your birds are beauties!

Pinks, nice lookin Blues/Copper. Know the Marans are hefty eaters, but they are such delicious eye-candy, and the eggs.....what more can one say Hope the breeding is successful and am sure you will keep us posted!!

oh how I wish that were true...I was just lookin at my youngest ones and am seeing some that are not worth wasting feed on. Blech. Oh, well...that's how it goes. I'm still bummed about this little one...although she isn't shivering anymore...and seems to be settling in. I'm gonna leave her wrapped in the towel for a bit longer and try to give her some warm liquid in a bit. I'm hoping she pulls through.

thanks Donna...I'm hoping so too. She's a friendly little thing..and looks just like her bigger counterparts...so am wanting to breed her with the smallest BCM cockerel i have...he throws good offspring...especially in pullets...so we'll see if it all pans out or not.

Any chance this is a maran of some sort? Or part maran??? And I am thinking its a cockerl???
Has the golden/copper hackles, dark beak and legs, red flecks and blue shiny feathers coming in on back and tail...
