Oh Pink, I am so sorry.

I know you LOVED that boy!

Yes, it is possible for them to just have heart attacks. The delawares have a reputation for doing that is some of the lines.
Is it possible he got bit by a snake?

I am so sorry again.

Thank you friends!

Yes I loved that boy....even with his carnation comb genetics.

Math~ We don't have snakes around here that could do him any harm I don't think, besides I think Gnarles would have been the one doing harm to the snake if it was, last summer I watch Gnarles jump straight up in the air and snag a robin mid flight and then ate him. That was a sight to behold and that robin should not have been in Gnarles coop yard trying to steal the treats that had just been tossed out.
I know we have one kind of posionous snake here, but it is a small one and I can't remember it's name and I believe they are all snuggled up in their burrows or hiding spaces right now with how cold it is here lately.

With the way he was on the ground....it had to be something very sudden.

Oh, pink, I am so sorry to hear about Gnarles.

Love the robin story, tho
It is stories like this that make us hold onto too many roosters.
I am starting to have a few too many Clyde backups, but I hate hearing stories like Gnarles

Those are some great pictures. I copied one and stuck it in my Marans SOP folder, hope that is okay. So far, nothing like this on the little ones I have.

Thanks and no problem if you borrowed a photo....that's what I post them for. The more folks that know what this is and are aware of it in this breed of chickens....the better.

Share that with everyone you know if they have Marans. I plan on keeping this little male for taking photos of as he grows out so we have lots of progressive photos of the carnation.

Besides, I have to keep him now as I found Gnarles dead in the coop yesterday when I went out to feed. I don't believe he was sick, he showed absolutely no signs of anything and I couldn't find any injuries. He has been healthy and happy and just finished a really hard molt and was looking glorious again.
Is it possible that they just have random heart attacks and die? He wasn't all bunched up or curled up in himself like a sick bird will do, he was rather sprawled out, like he had a random heart attack and fell off the perch. I found him on the ground of the coop just below the roost.

Aww Kim....That stinks you lost Gnarles.

I always hate when a bird dies and there is not a hugely obvious reason for it and no warning signs either.

Oh Kim, so sorry!!

He was such a special guy, with or without faults. I am so sad to hear this. I lost a hen here a few months back, kind of the same deal. No sickness, no signs of trauma. With her, I think something scared her off the roost, and she flew right into the heavy chain holding up the feeder. That was the only think I could come up with, never thought of a heart attack.
