You're probably right. Billy now looks just like Bill in the pic you posted back a page or so, when he was very dark. Billy is just now getting sporadic coppering in his hackles and saddle area. Billy is Black.

Yup, that's what I am gathering from my notes. "Bill x Bill's Bl. dau. feathered" = Myron

I forgot about Bill being the dad......clean shanks and sparsely stubbed shanks explained fully now. We are lucky we got the few stubs out of that cross.

Bill = VERY CLEAN LEGGED.

These guys are too; with the exception of what looks like a wee Charlie Chaplin mustache in the middle of their shanks!

Hello friends

It's been a long time since I've posted here but I have a question that I'm sure the Marans gurus here might be able to answer.

Background story: Sadly I just lost my only Black Copper Marans roo *Goober* Goober was a Wade Jean, and he was a prize. He was docile, gorgeous, and he conformed like no other BCM rooster that I've ever owned. I found him dead in the coop and I have no idea whatsoever. He was healthy, eating and doing his roosterly dutys the day before. The sadness was overwhelming. However, about 8 months ago I sold a dozen chicks to a man in the next town over, and six of them turned out to be roos. He's sent me photos and I have chosen the best one that comes very close to resembling Goober. The deal was that I would trade one hen of his choosing for the rooster of my choosing. We'll do this after the madness of the holidays have passed. He's excited, I'm excited and all is well with the world again.

Crazy thing is that I have one BCM pullet that has absolutely no copper on her neck. She's solid black! Beautiful no doubt but would you call that a Black Copper Marans? He's partial to the solid black girls and she's his choice. Am I missing something? I have a yard full of beautiful ladies with beautiful necklaces of copper! Tell me that she's not the goose that laid the golden egg LOL! It's his choice, and I'm good with that. My girls need another man in their yard, and I'm willing to part with nice for nice. Just wondering if there's something to this all black lady.

Hi Chicky Tocks! Merry Christmas!

Sometimes they just do not show copper...I have several of them because my birds are very dark and over melanized, not really a huge issue unless you are showing them as the standard calls for females with copper hackles.
Is she from Copper parents? If she is, then she IS a Black Copper that is just very dark and over melanized and copper is covered, but it is still there.

There is just a black color Marans, or she could just be lacking in the copper.
I wouldn't think she is the golden egg, as she can be replaced pretty easily.
Did you hatch them all out yourself, or did you get this bunch from someone who mistakenly threw her into the bunch?

Nope, I hatched her myself. Both of her parents are Black Coppers. I thought that she might just be a throwback in the breed, but it makes sense that's she's just an over-melanized hen. Fortunately the guy that wants her isn't breeding. He sells eggs to a co-op and he wants to include the dark egg in his basket. He called me this morning and asked if I fed my girls anything special to get them to lay the dark egg, because his just started laying and the eggs are coming out speckled. I had to laugh a little and told him that when the girls begin to lay, they often come out speckled because their spray pumps are just starting to prime. Hope these solid girls come through for him and lay some nice, dark eggs.

And....thank you! Merry Christmas to you all as well
