Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

It would have to be one of the really big shows - I've seen some "winning" pictures from some shows, and I wouldn't use those photos to illustrate the SOP.

welll, I kind of thought the same thing myself, but what do I know

? btw, I went and sat with the chickens for a while and got a good look at legs on the roos, most of them look like the pictures of the legs on your roo you posted, some a little darker. All of the hens have the darker slate legs.

Funny you say that.... my marans always hatch at 19days! No matter if I use an incubator or a broody hen.... does anyone else see this?

Thanks. It lasts a good long time....the vet wrap they have on in the updated photos is still the same wrap they had on in their first photos after hatch. Not one has lost their band and they hatched on Thanksgiving and the day after.

I don't know if they last longer than zip ties because I haven't used zips so I can't say.

Hi Keara!

I haven't had early babies since I got the Sportsman....I had early babies all the time with the little stryobators, but I haven't had an early chickie under a broody yet.

That last photo of Bill (the headshot that inquired about the thumb print...will touch on that in a minute

) showed the wrong color ear coverts.

Is there a prize for having birds the most faults?????

I got the greatest photo today of "mossy" for you.

About Bill's comb....do you seriously see thumbprint? I went out today and gave him a work over and I can't see or feel thumbprint on his comb. Am I looking at the wrong thing?
I can see the thumbprint on Cad's bird but cannot see it on Bill. I have some more comb photos of Bill's comb that I will look for in the morning and tell me what you think. If he does have the thumbprint all I can say is that with the stupid carnation stuff happening around here........I'll take 20 thumbprints please.

I'm just catching up here after being gone a couple of days. Isn't "Wry Tail" a DQ?? Seems to be missing, or have I not had enough coffee yet?

Morning Debbi!
Wry tail might not be on this list but she has it listed and photo'd in the other 2 threads.

Split tail? Is that when you are looking at them full on back view and the tail looks as though it is literally split in half? Like a left side and right side?

Pink your Birchen's are cute! I ended up with 6 chicks 3 pullets and 3 cockrells. I need to get some pictures up, maybe this long weekend. Dark when I leave dark when I get home I just don't like winter too awful much

I've seen first hand, they aren't perfect even at the REALLY big shows. Just the best the judge has to work with that day.

But - it might be fun to post the winning birds' pictures and critique those!! Although I bet their owners wouldn't like it much!!!!!
