Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Morning, all!
To the comment about the red/white getting BV...
He was probably the only one there.
Since he wasn't Black copper, or Wheaten, he couldn't go any further in the show.
The owner probably drove a long way, and put alot of effort into going and showing.
So why send him home with a DQ, give the poor thing a ribbon and make them happy.
These are the things that judges have to consider.
I would love to hear what Walt has to say.....

Good morning! I have to strongly disagree with you here. If it's a DQ, why should it be so for some, and not ALL? If you want a ribbon, then bring a bird worthy of one! JMO

I just posted the pics to show feather coloring not for sprig evaluations but it is a really good example of a sprig lol.

Now here is another one that I did not see a sprig but was DQ'd for side sprig. I tried to get a good look at the other side of this fellow's comb but he wasn't cooperating LOL! He is labled Splash Marans

I gotta agree. I guess I don't see how it would be in the best interest of anyone to not uphold a standard regardless of how far someone has traveled or etc to place a bird that should be DQ'd especially if some were and some were not DQ'd?

Well, that's a biggun! But so was the other one. Splash?? As in Wheaten Splash? Can't see the Birchen too well.

Maybe he was DQ for color, and also had a side sprig.
The tags are sometimes hard to read.

And, some people have no idea what they have, so they learn by going to shows.
Not everyone has a SOP in their hands.....

This was the that first show with BCMs trying to get APA. None were actually approved yet when they were judged, I don't believe. The BCMs were approved afterwards. The Wheatens didn't get approval till later as well.

Exactly! Even if it is a new and more rare color, why would you display it knowing it has a DQ? Why would you want to breed it, or make other people want eggs/chicks from it? And what does it say to the kids who are just learning? Someone else's chicken is better than yours even though it should've been DQ?? Doesn't make any sense to me.

I don't know I'm thinking wheaten splash because he doesn't look like my copper splashes. Funny how it doesn't say on the tag. Haha this is the show that you just loved those tags that say Maran instead of Marans LOL!
