I'm glad to hear your bantie girl is doing well. Do you only have the one bantam or do you have a male for her now as well?

It was funny, when I was crossing birds that were the smallest I only ended up hatching girls...5 of them. Kind of did it on a whim, just to see what I'd get and no boys!

So....what I'm gonna do is cross just her, since she has the best type and style and did have not such bad egg color til she got hurt, to the smallest bcm boy I have...he is less then half the size of gigantor and for sure has the right dark egg color genes since he produces nice offspring, particularly girls. Then I'll only keep just the top 5 or 6 or so and see how it goes from there. Its a long term project I work on only when I have a bit of time here and there and when I need a break from one of my other projects.

Haha that figures the one time you need boys lol you get all girls. That sounds like me. I've been trying to hatch a small boy for my small blue marans girl but the only small one I got was another girl. So now I have two small blue girls. One of those splash boys I had was kinda small and I was thinking about using him until I saw the sprig he had, so he and his relatives had to get culled so back to square 1 on that. I think I need some new blue blood

I have 2 more blue males but they are just HUGE so probably not going to throw small babies. My original blue girl got hurt from a large rooster so I don't want to put her with any more. He tore up her scalp and ruined part of her comb that terd! They don't seem to be able to get on her and balance since she's so small, so they grab her by the head and rip.

Glad to hear the little one is getting out and about!

I'll have to go back and read them! I'm thinking I'm gonna probably stay a lurker for a while longer on the coop forum. I've followed different topics on there for quite a while, but don't know if I'm ready for that heavy of hitting stuff. I'd really love to find out more about hands on research being done with the carnation comb and how they have done it. I'm probably too curious for my own good, but it kind of fascinates me.

yeah....I had one of those other bantam girls slip into another pen behind me one day when I was doing chores and one of my big boys saw her and did pretty much the same thing. Its not pretty. But the other girls got to go live with someone else who wanted some pet chickens. They were a perfect fit since they are so spoiled!

Yes, I think I'll lurk too. If you and Kim are shy, then they sure don't need this idiot in there being all confused!!

I'll let you guys translate it to me.

haha... you would probably laugh your head off at me when I start reading...then re reading a sentence again and again. Then I go off and do something else and come back to it later....and let it sink in, then go raid my dad's genetics library and notes he has and try to wrap my head around it. I do great with laymen's terms and such, but when you start adding in the technical side of it, it just doesn't translate well in my head...or I guess maybe I should say it doesn't come entirely naturally to be able to just rattle it off and know how all the different symbols interact with each other a such. Basically I know what I know and I know I need to learn a lot more, but that's kind of what I love about chickens, there is always more to learn. I am really really curious to see what others over there have to say about the carnation thing, because if there is the possibility of hatching out a percentage that carry two normal genes...then to me that says there is some hope...but it would be a really, really long process to go through if so.

OUCH! Poor girl. Guess the boys would have a hard time hanging on. It would be like a 6' 5" man trying to ride a tricycle!
