I don't understand why these are not in the incubator??????????????

haha....Don't tempt me! But really, I don't have my breeding pens set up and would have no idea what the chicks would end up being. I have Wyandottes and Sussex mixed in where some of them are growing out and also have color varieties running together in another one. I've taken to merging them like that as I find not only does it help them stay warmer at night when its cold, but I am using less pens and also having birds in with my Marans tends to help them learn to have better attitudes from my little sweeties.
Some of these eggs are firsts and some are ones that have been showing up for a little bit for now...can't wait til I can get the incubator going tho!

I bet...but this raises a question I've been meaning to ask about what others observe about their marans....does anyone else notice that the Marans are water hounds? Mine drink more water than I thought was possible. They LOVE it! I have pans for drinking and even in warmer months will put in pans for them to play in. In an average pen of adults...say between 8 and 10 in the summer I am going through at least 3-5 gallons a day with them...multiply that by the 8 existing breeding pens I have and my grow out pens where the chicks drink waaay more since here's more of them in there. I easily spend a half an hour a day hauling just the water. Im' working on a system for the watering that will hopefully help me out quite a bit. I've got a few good solid ideas I need to sketch out now
i should mention...the water I'm hauling doesn't even cover my other breeds pens...

My Marans seem like water hogs too. The hens more than the roos though. None are as much water hogs than my buff orp girls. I have one buff orp who likes to stand in the middle of the ducks kiddie pool- up to her shoulders and drink. She is a silly thing. I let her out to freerange and she goes straight to that pool and hops right in even though she has a full water container in her pen. I guess she needs to cool off her big fluffy butt lol.

haha too funny! I love the characters like that...they just do what they want and have a mind of their own. Cracks me up!

New Years Babies!

I believe there are 5 pullets and 6 cockerels.

The flash wash out how dark or gray most of their little bellies and chests are...there are a couple though that have more normal white markings but none of them really have it on the face like I am used to.

Genders are a guess at this time.

1st is the little red head - male
This is one of the 2 that has the horn colored legs.....the photo may make them look greenish, but they are not.

Pullet - She also has the horn colors legs and feet.....see the toes and the webbing (the skin inbetween the toes) see how it is just off and not the normal color of Marans for the feet and toes.

Male - one with some white markings on the face

I know this thread has been through this before so please excuse the redundancy.

Pink could you please use these photos to tell me what you are basing your gender guesses on?

Thanks.

That would be wonderful! I too would like to know. But I have to admit I think Pink is just the chicken whisper!

Also, Pink, what did you use to band them... that looks interesting!
