I always look for opportunities when it comes to shows and arranging presales for birds I've been waiting for because it is such a good opportunity to get better quality birds and even better when people can bring enough for ya to pick out the ones you want!
That's awesome that you have sold some and have some buyers set up! I'm gonna be doing quite a bit of selling and sorting through who can go asap! My numbers are gonna be going down! Just like they need to be

Last time I picked up some lavender orpingtons at the show. The one rooster I got was covered with lice and I didn't realize it till we got in the car. Once I got him home he went straight to quarantine and got wormed and de-loused. Lesson learned on my part look good for lice next time and don't be in a hurry lol. He sure turned out to be a nice boy. He looks so good now so I'm not sorry but will be very careful next time. I almost rather get eggs than birds that have been living somewhere else but of course that's no guarantee either.

Yeah too bad no one wants a bunch of roos lol. They mostly want hens/pullets and only one roo. Its funny how when you aren't trying to get rid of anything, that's when people come wanting to get birds lol.

I so know how that goes...I have people asking me left and right, always right after I've culled really heavily...it is so annoying!

Have a question about Marans?? I am getting a couple of black copper marans hens. How old are they usually when they start to lay? How old would be too old (how long do they usually lay) ? I am new to chickens. But this is one of the breeds I really want to concentrate on raising. The hens I am buying are a year old. Is that to old? I want to learn all I can about this breed.
If you have any input would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Update on the Wine-bator test run:

Apparently, I was lucky enough to be sent an IncuKit with a faulty thermostat. Yeah,...not really! So after, the empty test runs, thinking I had the kinks worked out, I filled one of the rack with eggs (Marans, Cochin, EE’s) and I struggled to get the temp stabilized. It would ready 99.5, then 8hrs later spike to 103, 105, etc. I would then try and adjust it and the process would repeat itself. After 5 days of that game I called the company for a replacement or my money back. They mentioned they would gladly send a replacement.

So last night, I pulled 12 eggs out to start tossing them out. I figured I had COOKED them all. Well, to my surprise and disbelief, the first egg I cracked had a live developing embryo in it! WTH, I thought! First, I felt awful for the little guy then I thought about the rest of the eggs.......

Are they really developing? Can they be developing properly? Should I ride the incubation out? (Which is my inclination) Or should I spare the developing chicks from what, one might imagine would be a flock of deformed zombie chicks if they hatch and just start fresh?

BTW, I just got the new kit today.

I am going to post this on the “Hatching and incubation” thread to see what those folks say.

Thanks my friends, as your experience and advice is greatly appreciated.
