Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Nice to see everyone is still hatching even if the girls have slowed down.

I hatched a few from Egg-cellent and Charm 1704 to add to my genetic pool. But of course 2 have lost their leg bands already and as they were brooded with other marans crosses (busy boys) I'm have a little trouble figuring out which are 100% FBCM and those which are not. I'm hoping it will become obvious as they grow and feather out.

I'm hoping for a gentle winter this year. No appreciable snow so far-- would rather have a few inches of snow than this cold rain. I kept a number of pens cooped up and not allowed to free range yesterday. Just miserable rain. Here's wishing for a little snow instead!

Hi Karen! Haven't seen you in a long time! If you have true, solid blues; (true meaning no copper in their background at all), I would suggest you keep them seperately! True solid Blues and Blacks are very hard to find!!!

It's funny what you figure out after awhile. I remember someone asking me if my blue marans was a solid blue a while back. I knew there was copper in his background but he looked all blue to me so I confidently replied "he is solid blue". lol Having no idea what I was talking about of course. hahah youngsters... lol I wonder what dumb thing I am gonna say today that I will realize months later is dumb.

I know this is the Marans thread but I just HAVE to share this little Olive Egger, 3 weeks old on Sunday (hatched on Christmas Day - first one out). Splash Ameraucana mom and Blue Copper Marans daddy. I just LOVE the look of this chick. A little olive egger splash!!!

Updated pictures of my Crossroads Black Copper Marans (8 weeks old on Sunday). Not a bit of colour showing on any of these birds yet. Just black.

My chicks are 16 days old and I wonder if any gender guessing pros would like to give it a go. I have a lot of pics so instead of posting all the pics here I have them online. Just click this link to go to the page... http://www.christiesnails.com/chix/marans/ It should open up in a new window so you don't lose your spot here.

Thank you!
Christie, I'm having problems with pics loading, so I can only comment on a few that did. The Wheaten is a pullet, as is the Splash. And yes, that one bird has mossy wing feathers. Looks like yours did ok in the comb department too! Congrats!!

Barb, I love Ann!! The other pullet almost looks rumpless? May be the way she is standing, but did you check her for a pope's nose?? Cute babies!

I was going to take baby pics today, and forgot the batteries needed re-charging. Doing that now, and if it isn't too late, will post a pic of my 2 Silkie babies.

Ended up falling on my keester today when my computer chair gave out! I mean the darn thing just snapped!

I really think my male dog loves it when I fall, he was all over me with a laugh on his face! On the good side, I got 4 Marans eggs today!

Hey Christie, it's all part of the learning curve! If I had a dime for every dumb thing I've ever said in my life, Bill Gates would look like a pauper in comparison to me!

It all sinks in, in time...like osmosis. So don't feel alone, everyone at some point has made that very same mistake!
