Slightly off topic......was reading about blood spots in the egg and that it could be a sign of a Vitamin A deficiency. Also if a chicken is missing it's mark when pecking, this could also be a sign of Vitamin A def. (read this in the Chicken Health Handbook) Vitamin A def. is not necessarily due to poor nutrition but can be brought on by such things as Cocci and worms. Just found it an interesting little tid bit.
Ohhhh and too much Vitamin D can cause calcium pimples on the egg shell that will rub off and leave tiny holes in the shell. Excessive Vit. D can cause kidney damage. Also from the Chicken Health Handbook by Gail Damerow. I love this book...it never leaves the top of my desk and is always in plain sight.
