Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

You could move to Hawaii! My husband and I bought a beautiful 5 acre piece of property 1 year ago for 125,000. We don't live on it yet. Probably gonna retire there. Lol! We live on our 3 acre piece now. Each acre where we are now goes for about 20,000.
Not enough space for cows or crops but great for kids and chickens!!

20,000 an acre?!?! Even if it is Hawaii...that's way too rich for my blood to justify since i'm looking for at least 21 acres or more. Ideally somewhere between 40 and 80 ares. That's 800,000 for 40 acres! I could buy a ranch in western nebraska that is several hundred acres and have a house for that! And the bonus is that it would be in the boonies...just the way I like it hahha

Feed stores bring in mass amounts of barred rocks, sex link reds and Easter eggers (of course they call them amerIcanas so every thinks they have amerIcanas)and of course fighting cocks are big over here. But if you want a specific breed that is not run of the mill or hatchery chicks you must go through the hassle I have gone through with shipped eggs

Yeah, I've read some of your hatching rates and such. I can't imagine! That's a lo of the reason I like being in the midwest...besides good people, I like that I can order all around and generally have very minimal problems with shipping. That is until the changes they've made at the beginning of the year with shutting down parts of the mail service. We'll see how it goes after that

I am new here .................................................................
Lots of beautiful bird to see, will take me some time to learn about type and breed standards etc.

Like Zootopia I'm new here too. Finally getting brave I decided to try keeping chickens with our show dogs. Breeding and showing Borzoi for 40 years, I've learned to take care in also owning prey animals. We're working on a Fort to keep them safe. While my mother and grandparents all had chickens, I've owned cockatiels, an amazon, a pair of Baraband 'keets and a Goffin. I've still got a lot to learn

Fresh eggs from a neighbor spoiled us and a friends photo of his first Marans egg piqued the imagination.

We found our first BCM's on craigslist around Christmas, two hens and a young rooster.. Now I've read the first 700 pages of this forum it's obvious they all have faults to take them out of a breeding program. Still they are fairly typical type and body if culls in the details. Besides both hens are still laying here in California, north of Sacramento. One little girl lays a nice colored egg. My avatar shows a basket holding our first eggs.

Thank you all for the a wealth of knowledge. I feel like I know you all from the sharing and humor found here. Love studying this stuff, but for now our first chickens are our learner stock, although I expect we will be interested in upgrades.

Oh and Pink and Geebs, don't be surprised if you hear me giving you a shout on my next trip to home to Washington. I hope to make it to the Stockton Poultry show at the end of the month, just to look around. Maybe I'll see you there Sewandgrow?
Now to see if I can post this. It's all new. :weee
