Q for all: What do you use to mark your eggs? I've tried pencil, too light; white crayon, too pale.

I like how legible Gilavina's info is!

I use art markers and stabilo pencils, and prismacolor pencils....just whatever I have at the moment. Both the stabilos and prismacolors are both wax based, but much better quality than crayon...meaning the pigment is much stronger. Below is a photo of one of the eggs that I just marked on the side for you. The top one is stabilo and the bottom is prismacolors. Any art store should carry them and they last forever. I just used yellow because I'm working on an art project and had them sitting out on my desk. Pretty much any color should work because of the wax

Vicki - sending you some pics of the boys!

Sounds good...I'm just working around the house today getting myself organized. Trying to put some stuff in storage and getting out materials for art projects i've got coming up. Oh...and yesterday when I was running errands in town I saw a lot of stores are getting in their seed starting supplies...so that means I'm gonna have another set of to dos...but luckily I love growing things. Plants seem to like me pretty well.

Great to know as my previous attempts to mark the eggs have been a big flop! THanks for the great pics, too, to illustrate the different effects.

Would love to see some of your art work, too. Do you do chickens??

Oh...Hens! I went out and checked for eggs and guess what I found?! I got my first egg from my F1 cuckoo girl crossed with my original cuckoo boy. So, in the bator its going! Its got a decent layer of bloom but I'm still gonna hoping for a hatch from it.

Also, Kim...you remember me mentioning that black girl of mine that is really shy and I can't seem to hardly find her and have never gotten a pic of her? Well...I also had never seen any eggs from her, but today I caught her coming out from between the building and the pen's side where a bush leans over towards the pen....so I went around and craned my neck and I found a nest of three eggies...all nice and dark! I'm so excited! She's definitely one that is going to be used for test mating!

After all the effort to write on info that is so important--how do you keep track of which chick pushed out of which egg? Do you segregate the eggs in some manner at lockdown??
