Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Hi all,

Just got done replying to many PMs, thank you all! Haven't been here to see the excitement, but will have to go back and read/see. ALL IS GOOD, I HAVE MADE PEACE WITH ALL INVOLVED!! For all of you that have been here over the last few months, I apologize if my "Comb Cop" attitude has gotten out of hand. This problem has made me CRAZY! My intention is to inform newbies and oldies alike as to what we are dealing with here within our already, extremely small gene pool in this country! I will show you pics of my good, bad, and totally UGLY, in hopes that someone will see and learn from it. Did NOT mean to offend anyone, ever! Ok, back to our regularly scheduled program! Marans, Marans, Marans!!!

I don't think I am having much luck hatching since my MASSACRE in the HATCHER...... My temp was steady for 2 days at 99 then when I put the eggs in it dropped to 95, I got it up to 97 with some tinkering after a day and then up to 99 again... but alas it dropped to 97 again.... I just don't get it!!!!!

Today was day 21 and nothing... I am hoping they are just slow because of the temps.... I even changed the bulbs to 100 watts from 75..... More tinkering is in order.....

pretty much anywhere that carries yarn should have the canvas stuff....I got mine at Joanns. They were pieces about 13" by 22" and in 1/8 inch grids with a bit of thickness behind it. They were 1.70 or so a sheet

awesome! I went and bought more yesterday since I've got that hatcher coming. I'll need to make enough for three more hatching trays worth. I'm so excited! If you have any questions, let me know!

Absolutely!
I have to get ready because it looks like these will be my first hatchlings of the season... Buff Leghorns.... Go Figure!
I hear the roos are nice and mellow! I don't know about that because my marans and delaware roosters have set the
bar for Great behavior and friendliness pretty dang HIGH!

I'm so glad its all working out for you!

So - I cleaned out my incubator as well as possible today...

Is there any way to clean out a Sportsman inside the machinery cabinet?? Everything looks fairly clean in there, other than the motor is covered in chick dust. The fan, thermostat, and wiring all appear clean.

I didn't take it apart b/c it doesn't appear to be made to come apart easily!

Vicki - I looked again at my Sportsman (it is an incubator) There's no way I can put a cover on the hatching try and probably can't put in the boxes, either, b/c the bottom turning tray dips into the hatching tray on each side as it turns.... so, then what?

I do have the Dickey hatcher, but that has the wafter thermostat and I've been reluctant to switch the eggs from the Sportsman, where they've done well and put them into another place to hatch... (I'm sure everyone does it all the time!!)

I have 5 hatching trays in the Dickey - so I could do the lids and/or the separate boxes in there - ?? -
