Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks!!
I was really excited when I found them....now to get the darker egg girl to lay in the nest box...

I just put the purple band man in with the young girls, so - I'll give it a few days and start collecting eggs!!

I put the blue band man in with the hens and the Bryant roo has one hen from Sue - I need to get him 2 more.

good job! still workin on movin birds around here...but its lookin like about 40 birdies are gonna either find new homes or go to freezer camp. So, after all that, I should have a really good start to the season in earnest!

Wow!
You're good, Vicki!

I need to go through all my young girls again and see who stays or not.
Then, look at the hens again. (ad nauseum!)

I got an order for:
12 POL pullets
12 POL pullets
18 chicks (laying) and 2 POL pullets
6 POL pullets

All in the last two days!

MTA: all the above are for eating eggs - not any name breed pullets

nice...think you have enough to fill those orders with what you've already culled through?

I don't know that I'm good so much as I got held up last fall with my back...so I feel like I'm incredibly behind. Although, I do look forward to seeing what the ones I do end up holding back look like without all the others mixed in!

Yep - I have @50 girls in the layer house with about 2/3 being POL (raised them in my BASEMENT this winter
th.gif
- remind me never to do that again!)
I'm not selling the BCM - just the BCMxRed Star for now.

I'm too greedy - I want a pretty egg basket at home and for eating eggs!
With the dark egg layers, plus my sole blue egg layer, and my olive eggers should be starting to lay any day now = should be a really pretty egg basket!

AND I'm getting some EE hatching eggs from Donna, so will have MORE BLUE eggies by autumn, if all goes well!!

awesome. you have those covered no problem! I always love thinning down like that to make room for the next generation!

I'm hoping since I don't have to go to work til 1 tomorrow that I can make some progress on the shifting after I do chores. And I totally hear you about not growing out chicks during the winter in the basement. I'm dying with the ones I have right now. They are no behaving very well, but am hoping with this nice weather and them being feathered in now, that they will be good to go outside.

Looking at my BCM pen after you helped me cull really helped me see things better!
An icky girl really stands out in the bunch of nice girls!

I can totally see how you were right about that!

Yeah - I must have walked 3 miles yesterday moving everyone around on the farm...back and forth and back.....

I need to wait a bit before adding the new girls to the big girl pen b/c they got beat up pretty badly last time (3mths old) - but I'm hoping I can see what I need to see, so I can figure out who stays and who goes from that group (then, I'll check with you!! LOL!)

see...I told you it would come! Its just hard to see the good from the bad when you are not certain what you are looking for. I'm happy to help with lending a set of eyes. Did you have another email for me to look at? I haven't had a chance so far to get caught up on regular email.

Be nice to have a lull in the feed bill before all those chicks starting eating us out of house and home, too!!
