Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

evenin everyone.... rain here all day. I was gonna try to get some pics when I got home from work of those little ladies Kim, but I instead spent most of my time trying to catch some wyandottes that decided it was a good idea to escape. I'll try again in the mornin...there still kinda wild but they are not freaking out when they see me anymore at least.

Also got another one of those tiny little decently dark spotted eggs...about the size of a robin's egg.

Thanks everyone for the compliments on the purplish eggs. They are really something aren't they? I love them.

Here is my youngest Splash Copper boy. I'm really liking him, hope he continues on the path he is on as far as coloring up. I really like his comb. His legs are a little lighter than I care for and they look kinda white-ish but they are very pale blue. His shank feathering could be heavier but atleast he has some of them. Really excited to see his eye color once it changes.

WoW! That photo sure turned out larger than expected.

Will work on loading photos of the Birchens next.

Vicki~ Congrats on the egg. The photo you posted of them the other day was very cute. No worries on the photos....I know how it gets. I was able to snap a couple photos of the youngin's today. I'll be lucky to get them uploaded before I get frustrated and call it quits due to the slowness of the process....but a glass of watermelon wine that one of our bestest neighbors made last summer and The Doobie Brothers (one of my favorite bands) playing on the cd, helps pass the time.

I like that splash boy...he looks like he's gonna get quite beefy by the looks of him! My splash boy also has more pale blue on his legs, but throws nice leg colored chicks

Hi everyone>

I hatched some eggs i got at ebay. They should be Black copper marans but some of them I think are not. Some chicks look similar but are darker (not enough white). I don't know much about the breed ...so here is a photo of one of the chicks.

cute but not so sure is a black copper marans. What you think?

mabhera~ Hi! Welcome to the Marans thread! Sometimes they don't always have alot of white on them at hatch. Give them some time to grow out before making any decisions on them.

I just wanted to say that I adore the Marans chicken breed!! I am just starting my very first flock and the only roo I am going to not eat (ie, keep) is going to be a Marans roo! Most of my laying hens will be Marans too!!
They are SO beautiful!
It seems like everyone has the naked legged Marans, though, and I LOVE them all, but I more love the really classic-looking feather-legged I also see a ton of the black copper, but it isn't my absolute favorite. I can't remember the color name, but the hens are a buff golden or wheaten color and the Roos have more red on them. They look just like french countryside paintings. They are so GORGEOUS!!!

Did I mention that I love Marans?
Oh, and plus their eggs are awesomely awesome. :D
I am going to try and find a good breeder because I want really pretty chickens and I don't believe that a hatchery is going to really breed for breed standards and nice eggs... but I'm so new to this that I could be completely wrong... anyone know?
