His sisters lay very dark eggs so hoping he will improve the egg color some. I think I am going to grow up about 30 right now so I can have options

Well my fan died in the hatcher... after lockdown... so I didn't worry about it since the temps are fine. I had 3-4 pips yesterday (day 19) and 9 babies already today (day 20) Humidity is good... lots of pips... all but 3 of my dark, dark Marans had pipped. 2 were out 2 were zipped so I am thinking I will have a good hatch... Originally set 90 eggs, I think 64 are in the hatcher.

Do I need a fan really? I don't think they will shrink wrap as often with out it....

Donna ~ I really like the color of the roo you have pictured. That, to me, is the correct copper color. The wing bow color would in my mind, show as more of a mahogany color in your other bird. Not that I don't like that color, I DO! But if looking for the more correct color, your boy pictured has it.

As for the fan in the hatcher...got an old computer tower handy?? You can swap a computer fan into the hatcher, but if all looks good so far, well, let it be. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! At least until the chicks hatch? Good luck!

Ok, still floating here! We've had 5 1/2" of rain in the last 2 days, with more to come. Some to the west and south of me have had almost 7"! Storms keep rolling in and out here. Randy, I am still here and viable, albeit soggy! I can see some tilling and liming of the runs when this all dries out! Talk about a stinky mess!!

Love that pic, Vicki!

It looks like the girls are having a Conversation about something important and your roo is watching over his girls and making sure everyone plays nice!!

Everyone who is hatching - GOOD LUCK!

The white feather thing. I've got that going on too in one rooster. He just turned 1, and the white feather just showed up. I wonder what's going on? And he's such a nice rooster.

Sometimes they get a white tail feather growing in right before they molt. See if it molts out and grows back in black. I have had two do this this spring. Another thing that can happen is a feather could be pulled out by another rooster and the new one will grow in white. If the feather is traumatically pulled and did not fall out naturally sometimes they can grow in white then come back in black after the next molt. I had this happen on 2 hens that got their neck and head feathers pulled out by roos. The new ones grew back in white then molted out to back to normal coloring.
BTW, That is a very nice looking rooster in your avatar photo from what I can see of him :)

I have a question... What color is the most desirable on the Black Coppers? I love the color on my Black copper, but I have a little roo that I hatched and I kinda like his color too... more the color I think Vicki's roo is. To me though, my guy is copper, this little roo is more Auburn Red color. Is it just a preference thing?

My black copper breeder

The little roo is kinda the color of this roos wings all over. Very pretty, but I want to breed for correct color too and am looking for clarification.

got a couple of pics last night. some of the eggs that will be going into the incubator....the white is a sussex egg and all the others are from Black and Splash copper ladies. Hope the bloomy eggs hatch.

I was playing with settings on my camera and caught the girls in a what looks like a gab session over their main man. Kinda cracks me up!

Vicki, did you lick that egg?

thanks everyone...I really do enjoy these crazy birds. Its been lots of moving and rearranging in the main part of the barn, getting ready for spring now that I don't need everything in there...so the birds have been extra goofy.

I have to ask...does anyone still do silly stuff from when they were kids? I was just out catching nightcrawlers that are laying on the ground from all the rain, so I could put them in my raised tanks in the garden. One of the kitties was "helping" me...it was so much fun, but I couldn't help thinking if neighbors are watching, they probably think I'm nuts, but I'm gonna take advantage of those handy dandy natural tillers!

Just make sure the temps are staying the same at the top and the bottom of the incubator, if they are staying the same you probably could get by without a fan...I do think the fans help circulate the oxygen in the bators too though, especially the larger ones, so are helpful in that way.
