Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Kim, I see faint barring on your Splash boy too. Are these the chicks you got from the Bill line breeder?? Does she have Cuckoos too?

Here are my Easter babies, hatched Friday and Sat. Gosh they are small but very lively. Of course, in the pic they had just pigged out and were schnoozing until I woke them up. I think I saw some baby stink eyes! I'm on a roll today, this pic just took 20 minutes to load!

Sweet! Love the Partridge!!!

This Splash cockerel is from Lil' Bill and either my original Splash hen, or one of Bill's dtr's, #96, but not sure due to temporary loss of calendar

Woohoo! I have my first ever chicks hatching from my first attempt at breeding marans. This should be interesting tosee what they develop into. Congrats on everybody else's hatches also.

Debbi... I may have my first broody too...

not sure I want her to be broody.... She has pulled all her chest feathers out and I have had to fight her for the eggs for 3 days. If she keeps it up, I will move her and see what she does. I would not mind somebody else raising my babies. I have some in lock down do you think that would fix her right up?

You could try leaving some eggs under your broody. Once your chicks hatch out in the bator, if your hen is sitting tight and still acting broody, go into the coop at night with a flashlight and slip a few chicks under her and take out an egg or two. If she accepts them the next night put in the rest. I do it all the time with my broodies. New broodies may be more unreliable than more experienced ones but they usually will take them. The chicks will naturally snuggle right up under momma so I just put them under there and leave. I haven't had any rejected yet doing this.

The only hen I have that has ever rejected babies was a KW hen who didn't like the silkie baby she hatched. It was 3 days old and she decided she didn't like it. It was a little slower than the others (as silkies are lol) and had a huge crest. Her other two chicks were Key west chicks and they zip around real fast and would beat this chick to the food etc so I think she thought there was something wrong with it lol. I gave it to a different KW broody who I had let hatch out 3 other silkies and she accepted it right away even though it was 3 days old. In fact, she favors it for some reason. Weird birds....
