Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sorry, still a roo!

At least if he is going to the neighbor, they may let her visit? Get some more, she'll get over him.

Guess what y'all?? I'm laying in bed this am and hear the weirdest sound. I thought maybe a chick was hurt, so I ran out into the living room and Copper is sitting on the roost...I think it was crowing. It was a very squeaky (kinda sounda like a turkey noise to me!). So y'all were right, good old copper will be going to the neighbors! Thanks for all your expertise!

haha I'm not so sure I have the time really...I just make time and there's a couple of other people watching and feeding him while I have to work.....so he's well taken care of
Well darn you anyway!

Guess what I woke up to on my front porch this morning???? TWO kittens!

At least their goofy mamas are sort of taking care of them. These are the worst mama cats I've ever seen, the kittens don't usually make it to adulthood. Mine look to be about 3 weeks old....maybe??

Well, at least teach him how to crow! When mine start in the house, I give them voice lessons so that futher down the road, they will know what a crow should sound like!

Pip was in here the longest, and he has the most musical, "Hap py Birrrrrth day" type of crow, the one I like! I should've worked more with Clyde, his crow sounds like you are playing it backwards on a record! Really...I'm not crazy

Cutie kitten, Vicki!!
You're a good person to raise him up!

I have a "daddy" roo here, too!
He is SO sweet with the babies and shepherds them about, showing them all the nice things like grass and food
and how to run and hide, when he sees a crow or a hawk
(mine live in bunny cages until they're out with the big girls)

Mine are two brothers -
one deals with the youngsters and stays around the coop
and one takes the grown ladies out free ranging all day

I never thought about it - I just thought each roo has his own crow, but I really do prefer some over others!
I might have to try some 'voice lessons' here!

Yes, give it a try, it's fun! Especially when you have a cage of roos in the house. Making the morning coffee, one would start, then I'd reply with my version. I'm really surprised my Quaker Parakeets haven't started crowing! Finnius barks like a small dog, and Bruiser tells me "get your bowl"; something he learned from me telling my dog to get their dinner bowls. Funny how the bird picked up on the fact that if the bowl came, so did food!

Not bad for a bird brain, eh??

I have an egg question. Besides the color shouldn't marans eggs be more on the round side not as elongated as other eggs? I know folks cull for color but do you also cull for shape of the egg? Does anyone know who most influences the egg color the hen or the rooster, genetically speaking?
Hi Q!

I will cull for egg shape. I have one hen that is 3 years old and she lays a long pointy at both ends egg.....lovely color but just way the wrong shape. I use her in the laying flock for eating eggs. Both hen and rooster influence egg color but I am unsure if the rooster contributes to egg shape.

I've got two broody Silkie girls here now. One has been sitting almost full term now, I suspect. Can't tell how many she is sitting on, I can't make her move! Didn't want to disturb her, so I guess I'll just wait and see. Would be sad if it were only one egg.

My other eggs, Showgirls and Silkies, go into lockdown tomorrow!! The humidity here has been awful, and the good bator has been running a little higher than I'd like, even with a fan on it. All I need is one, NN, SG roo!!!!!!!!

Next go, I'm putting them all in the LG bator, that can't hold humidity for crap, then hatch them out in the King Suro. That may be just the recipe I need for spring/summer hatches here. Trying to find a way so that I don't have to buy a dehumidifier!

Got the garden tilled yesterday! Cleaning out the old deep litter from the coop today, and throw it in there and till again. Time to get the plants in the ground!! I can't wait for my first juicy tomato!!
