I know the 1 blue copper marans hen that I have is about 1 year old now and only shows faint copper color- it took atleast 6 months or so before we started seeing color. She has very little. The one blue copper rooster we have started showing around 3 months or so. I think it depends on the birds.I hate to keep pestering you all with my mundane questions...but since one of the things I'm working to improve with my flock is getting some color on my hens (mine are overmelanized), I'm anxious to see color on the pullets. How long does it take for the copper to appear if it is going to? I have a few that are getting some copper hackles and also quite a few that are still solid black. I'd like those all black ones to find laying flock homes...sooner than laterbut I don't want to sell birds that I would regret selling. The oldest ones are about 2 months old now.![]()
Speaking of pathetic crowers and pathetically late crowers.........this 6 mos. old young man just learned to crow not but a couple weeks ago and last night just as his new owner stepped out of his truck, the bird let out the worst attempt at a crow I think I have ever heard. The guy purchasing him looked at me like..... "What the heck was that?" I responded with......"IDK, but at first I thought he was dying....good thing his looks make up for it."![]()
Looking back at his photos I took last night....I don't know what's the matter with me.....I raise them up to this age and then get rid of them and I probably shouldn't have let this one go............................................. He's going to fill out nicely when he is fully matured.![]()

haha...I think most people think some of the things chicken people do are whacky. The best part is that you learn to just not care if they get it or not! hahaWell...to blow all (most) theories out of the water, my favorite OE girl WITH pea comb laid me a BROWN egg today![]()

So bummed - her full sister, just started laying a gorgeous dark green egg...
My SO thinks I'm whacky when I sit there, chatting with the girls, if one of the girls looks serious about laying, so I can mark the egg and hatch it - this was her 2nd egg...and now I KNOW who laid that lighter brown egg...
BUT - on a good note, at least it's not one of my Marans girls laying the lighter brown egg![]()
Congrats!! Don't forget to share picturesI'm now the proud papa of three Wheaten Maran chicks.
