Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks for all the feedback. I don't know what split breast is, ~ other than in the supermarket. ; ). Should he not be bred with that? Should I try to post a picture with a front view?

FLgarden, so cool that you rescued your chicks! I've been working day and night on a new outdoor run thanks to a fox problem.

I got 5 silver marans and 9 cuckoo marans from my hatch. Also had 2 EE eggs and they both hatched as well. There are still a few silver eggs in the bator. DH and I both swear we keep hearing peeps from the bator and no eggs are pipped. I've never heard them before peeping without having the egg pipped lol.

One of my silver marans is pure yellow. Two are very yellow with a greyish mix of feathers. Two are more very dark grey and have huge bright yellow marking on their heads and some lighter greyish markings on their backs. Most all of them have feathered shanks and outer toe. I think a few do not have the outer toe feathering but I will have to look again when I take pics.
I've got to get some pics but have been so busy the last two days and dead tired.. I've fallen asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow lol.

Most all of the regular cuckoos have feathered shanks :)

Yesterday morning about 6 am I heard lots of commotion in the back...chickens going crazy with their alarm sound, I run out there in my PJs and pink fuzzy slippers lol, and low and behold catch a large fox in the act of digging and trying to tear off the wire of the pen where I am keeping some 2 mos olds. OMG he was evil and he meant business too. I screamed because I didn't have any weapons on me at the time (dumb me) and I got close enough to him that I could have whacked him with a shovel if I had one in hand, lol. I guess he didn't hear me due to all the carrying on. You can see where he had dug around all 4 sides of the brooder and also ripped some of the roofing shingle off. When I screamed, the fox popped up and ran into the woods. Those babies sure were happy to see me and me them. I'm gonna have to set some traps!
Nice that you are getting some silvers! I'm getting more anxious for the chicks coming here...about three weeks or maybe a bit more!

i hope you can catch that fox! What a turd!

I think you should hold onto that boy for a bit and see if he grows into his breast....Its hard to know 100% what you are working with until they get out of the awkward phase....I'd say if you can hold him and reevaluate when he is about 6 months, you should be able to see how he's developed. A split breast is basically when there is a break in the roundness of the overall chest, where a line indents/splits down the middle.

I need to find out more about the silver marans genetics. I wonder if the pure yellow ones have a double recessive gene and the grayish yellow have a single recessive gene? Anyone know? These little guys seem so intelligent, they just have a way of looking at you like, "ya I seen it all before" LOL. I think the pure yellow one is a little roo. He was starting fights with the regular cuckoos while he was in the incubator.

hey lady...if you give me a few days, I'll see what I can find out for you from the guy I've been talking with over in the UK.

I agree with Vicki and think that if you can...you should hold on to him for a while longer. That split breast will fill in as he matures but I think it may take a bit longer than 6 mos. of age. I like him and think that he is worth holding on to. He has great copper!

Flgarden~ I hope you catch that fox!!!!!!

Blarney~ I hope you also get your fox problem solved!!!!

You know how sometimes we can get a really yellowy looking Splash? I wonder if it is the same with the Silvers?
