Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Number 1
Number 2

I thought Number 1 was the male because of how thick the legs were.

Here are the legs for number 1

Put them both in time out. They will be fine. Keep them away from the others and each other till they heal up. Blu kote is to keep others from pecking at the bloody red places, you don't really need it.

I have one cat carrier where I can put one of them in. So one is out with the others and have no problems while one is cooling his/her heels in the cat carrier. I had brought them in and wiped as much as the blood off as I could. They are both a little bruised.

Sorry for the bloodied chicks

Yes, if you keep them apart use a triple antibiotic ointment on the wounds. Blu Kote is also a medicine I think. You can get it at a place like TSC.

Chickens heal quickly so they will be fine. I think they are both Cockerels because of the combs and wattles. Also, 2 looks to have some hackle feathers already. 2 could be a dominant female--fighting that hard hasn't happened with any of mine yet.

Ok the lady who I got the eggs from just got off line when this happened. and had told me that I could tell just by the coloring.

Chickielady Quote - Should be very easy to tell.
Males are balder (especially on their backs) and much lighter in color with wider white bands & black bands.
Hens are darker & should be feathered evenly all over.
The males will also have a bigger comb already.

Can they ever be put back together?

How old are they again? Have they been together since hatching? If they have bloody each other this bad you might need to keep them apart. How many other chicks and how big of an area do you have them in? Sometimes you do get a chick that is mean to the rest at a young age- we have had that in the past.

I hatched out some purebred french black copper marans-bev davis line and got this little one. She has the feathered shanks and looks like the others except shes white...

Is she still a black copper marans or what? All eggs hatched were dark dark brown..

Not sure, she could possible be a splash but that would mean that there is blue somewhere in the back ground, generations back. Would be neat to see how she develops.

Marcy ~ I agree with Pink, he sure looks like a Blue Wheaten to me! He is a really nice boy too from the looks of it. If you don't want him, you might want to post him on the Wheaten thread, or in the BST section. Lots of folks with Wheatens would love to have him, I'm quite sure! Either that, or get yourself some Wheaten hens??
