Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

What color is this chick? (My best guess is splash.) It's from a Blue Copper x either blue or splash Ameraucana mating.

Looks like the color of CUTE to me!

Does it have any grey on its back? I have had some very light blues from my splash ameraucana X black copper marans matings. I might have thought they were splash except it was splash to black so I knew it had to be blue.

This thing looks sorta silverish at times, so I suppose there is the blue. I also have some that are a dark blue from that mating. My last hatch from this mating was all blue.

Slick ~ Look at the wing feathers coming in, in the pic they look white to me?? I would say Splash.

Ok Barb!!! The long awaited pic of the first broody hatched chick...albeit a Silkie! I will be putting some of my Marans eggs under these wee girls, they are awesome mothers and aunties!! Even the roo is so proud he could just bust! He keeps the chick between his legs when it gets cold out in the run. Hot here today, and I now have 4 of them hatched! These mamas are so strict with what you do with these babies! I have had my face launched at twice now when I bent over to have a closer look! The moms also attack the fence when a dog or cat walks by. Goooood girls!

The ground in the pen is being visited by Mr. Gopher, hey, saves me from taking the tiller in there!

Had a little excitement today.... if anyone wants to see.

On a brighter note, my little broody hatched me 3 little olive eggers today. I had one egg from my hatch the other day that still had a live chick so I gave it to her so we will see if she can get it to come out.

So I have a general chicken kinda question. When can I start using a rooster for breeding... he is trying to crow and doing a pitiful job is that any indicator? Hubby said wait till he crows.....

I am in a hurry to try him to make one improvement in some pullets, the sooner the better, since I will have to grow up one of his rooster chicks to start the next part of the project. I can already see he has good type and size so I am ok with using him if he is ready. I know he has some learning to do, but I am putting him with some experienced hens.
